Combi Boiler - advice please

Hi,
My partner and I bought our first house 6months ago and with it came a somewhat antique Ferroli boiler. The model no is 78ff. I have googled this and it is coming up with no hits so I have no idea how old it is and have no manual. It works fine albeit loudly except for the timer, something we have only just realised! It is an analogue timer which you push the tabs in or out according to when you want the heating on or off.
Having got up and dressed in record time this morning and then scraped the ice off of my car I am beginning to realise that with no timing on the heating it is either going to be a very long cold winter or warm expensive one!
Has anyone got any suggestions as to what could be wrong with the timer? Is it just knackered and needing replacing or is it time to bite the bullet and look at replacing the entire boiler rather than paying out a few hundred (I presume) on getting it serviced and the timer repaired? If replacing the boiler is the way to go and at the risk of sounding like an idiot whats the best way to go about this? Contact BG or a local gas engineer?
All advice gratefully received.

The manufacturers website is http://www.ferroli.co.uk
There are quite a few older model manuals listed in the 'Download' section, but unfortunately not yours.
I'd just give them a ring. If you ask, they may be able to email you a copy for yours.
If you go to the 'Support' section on the website, there are contact details for their domestic repair/service/spares dept.
