Gas usage
Hi,
Trying to get my head around my gas readings can anybody help? I’ve just been paying by DD but put my readings in and it’s says there’s something wrong
9th July meter reading was 10672
20th August meter reading was 10690
18th of September Meter was reading was 10709
Today 17th March my reading was 11691
Does that seem out of the ordinary? 19 units in 1 month but nearly 1000 in 6 months?
Also unit charge is 3.99p and standing charge is 21p what would it work out to?
Thanks

August is missing a digit. 0??0 -
Who reads the meters, when do they get read and do your bills have the letters A = Actual, C=Customer or E=Estimated against them.
Bills are only accurate if they are based on actual meter readings and not estimates and most people who don't bother or randomly read their meters get random bills and statements.
Most people use significantly less gas in August and September than they do in November, December, January, February and March. In fact it's in the proportion of 65% in 5 months to around 35% in the seven spring/summer and autumn months.
Reading your meters monthly rather than randomly will give you a much better picture of your consumption profile and you wouldn't get what you might consider to be random bills or readings.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Those readings are all accurate made by me. I understand more useage in the winter but that seems silly, just checked again now and it now reads 11695. I’ve had the heating on for 2 hours and had a shower and it’s gone up by 4 units.0

Its possible the first reading was 1161.99 and the latest 1165.01 - hence just over 2 rather than 4
19 units in a summer month is fine as is 1000 in a 6 month period that includes winterNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -

If you wish to convert meter readings into kWhs then you need to know if your meter is metric or imperial. The meter will display the words "m3" or "ft3" on the face to the right of the reading.
You can then use this converter https://www.ukpower.co.uk/home_energy/gas_meter_readings to turn the used units into a kWh value.
Or a quick guide -
1 imperial unit = 31.6586 kWh
1 metric unit = 11.1868 kWh
As for energy used for a year, that depends on a number of factors including boiler type, property gae, insulation, location, lifestyle.
In my property, my gas used went down by 50% by switching from a conventional boiler to a combi and adding more loft insulation. So gas was 1500 units under the old boiler to 700 for the new one (averages over several years)0 -
So you used 982 units in the 6 months Sept - March....and you used only 37 units in the 3 months July - Sept, the hottest summer we've had in a very long time.
Don't see much out of the ordinary there0 -
I've just checked my readings and I've used 755 units in the 8 months since 11 July, 713 units in the six months since 12 September. So your figures don't seem particularly 'out'.
I'm paying 3.57p per KwH (not per unit) and a standing charge of 17p per day. The conversion from units to KwH isn't a fixed calculation but changes marginally each month.
Our annual gas bill is anticipated to be £450.#2 Saving for Christmas 2024 - £1 a day challenge. £325 of £3660 -
It’s metric, there’s a big m3 on the front.
Like I say just trying to get my head round it all after some of the issues I’ve had with spark
If it seems about right then that’s fine0 -
Also just looked at my account and it states 3.99p is unit rate would that mean actual unit or kw?0
