Internet Explorer 7 - Worth Upgrading?

I currently use IE 6 and am periodically being prompted by microsoft to download IE 7.

Is this a worthwile update? Any particular issues to watch out for if I do update?

Yes, it is worth upgrading. 512 RAM is not an issue for upgrading, but will limit the number of applications you can have open or performance will be affected.

I am not a microsoft fan but I've read that IE7 is more secure. Personally I like the tabbed browsing feature, and when I recently changed pc's and found I was on IE6 I upgraded it straight away.

I upgraded a while back and had to reverse this back to IE6 as IE7 caused problems with my HP Scanners, they may now have sorted this or perhaps HP could have issued new drivers but I am staying with IE6 for the moment.

IE7 is more secure than IE6 so you should definitely upgrade.

But I use Firefox day-to-day, it's much better, much faster, more secure and there are so many add-ons that can improve security and the experience which leave IE dead. Firefox had tabbed browsing long before IE introduced it, and it's still a better implementation IMO.
  • Yes. The tabbed browsing (OK, I know Firefox did it already and better) is brilliant. The only caveat I would give to upgrading is to download a clean version from Microsoft, not a "customised" one from Yahoo!, etc.

I used to have IE6 then heard that Opera had tabbed browsing, so downloaded Opera. Then IE7 came along and I tried it too and now I've ditched Opera. I'm perfectly satisfied with IE7 so far. :)

No, not worth upgrading. Ditch it and switch to FireFox :)

I switched to IE7 from firefox and I'm perfectly happy with it. Far better than IE6.

    Thanks all.

I downloaded IE 7 today from the microsoft site and all seems ok There seems to be an unexpected benefit of faster surfing as well. All I need to do now is get used to the new look and figure now is how to use the tabs facility.

    Cheers
  • You can't use Windows Update without IE but that's the only reason you should use it.
