Average speeds

Options
I'm sorry, I know this has probably been asked a million times but I did have a quick look and couldn't find it.

I pay for Vodafone Superfast 1 38mb which we have been happy with (multiple devices plus teenagers doing their thing).

I would like to stay with them firstly because no-one has moaned about speeds since we got it (previously BT, Sky and Tesco) and secondly because every single time we have changed supplier we have been without internet for weeks and have had to make numerous phone calls until eventually an engineer finds a fault at the box. Every. Single. Time.

I don't think we ever actually get 38mb (although maybe we would if we wired, we all use wifi). A wifi speed test seems to average between 20mb and 26mb depending on time of day and who is doing what.

I'm now out of contract so can renew, at a slightly cheaper price. Or I can upgrade to Superfast 1 63mb for the same price. So my question is, if I upgrade to the 63mb will we get faster internet or will we still get the same average speeds?

As a general rule if you don't get 38Mb now its fruitless going any higher otherwise you'd be paying for something you can't get. Your speed won't increase if 26Mb is the fastest speed the line supports.

Key is what you get at the master socket .
Wifi has nothing to do with it .Its the line from your local cabinets thats the key .

As an example i am on an UP TO 52 meg product .
But nowadays the line can only support 30 meg .

There are a couple of ways to see what speed you are getting.

    1) install a speed test app on your phone.
Take the phone into the same room at the router and run the test.
Ok, this isn't doing to be an accurate result, but is easy and quick extimate

    2) THe other way is to talk to your router from your computer, and see what speed it is syncing at. (i'm loosing faith in this method! my sky router seams stuck on 39 or 40 and real world is different!)

If you can, see what speed you get by connecting a computer with a cable to the router. If it is faster than your WiFi connections, then there is the potential to get more out of the service. It is possible, but not guaranteed, that a different router will have better WiFi, but you could have to upgrade the WiFi receivers too.
If you're happy with the service, I'd be tempted to leave well alone!

If you don't have a computer to hard wire then click on the "Address Checker" link here: https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/ and let us know what the VDSL Range figures are (a screen grab would be best, just remove the address details at the top).

That looks like you will get a bit of a speed boost at the router by going to the faster package but the choke point seems to be the WiFi. Since this is all you use perhaps the lower speed package is more suitable for you.

You now to need to maximise the WiFi speed.

    Go to https://support.vodafone.co.uk/Vodafone-products-and-services/Broadband/Manage-Wi-Fi-Broadband/1170384052/How-do-I-change-Wi-Fi-channels-to-help-improve-my-broadband-speed.htm

It'll explain how to change the WiFi channel you're using (I've never used it BTW), try to stick to either channels 1, 6 or 11 for technical reasons I won't bother you with and then try a speed test.
