they've already waived the £18 charge AND given you £100 compensation ?
I think it was Halifax that have made that offer. But agree with the advise to speak nicely to Virgin Money

...called Halifax to inquire about it. They said don't worry no charge for this and Virgin credit card will try to take the money again tomorrow...........

I called my bank and complained, the customer service advisory gave me the false information. Virgin confirmed they don't recharge the DD.

Next time, don't take any notice when one bank tells you what a different bank will do. They often operate differently, so they can only speak for themselves.

Any advice on this matter would be welcome. Ideally i wanted to get the 0% back. or any financial compensation from Halifax?

Nope. You have zero chance of either.

Just a minor point; surely if you had the money to pay the DD, then wouldn't it have been a good idea to make sure it was in the correct account ready for when the DD was due?

Halifax don't pay interest, why let them have money longer than necessary?

But it means you take on risk, especially now if you have an overdraft Halifax have started sending vague messages a few days before you're going to go overdrawn rather than at the point where you've become over drawn. But you'll just have interest and lose the £2 if you mess up. If you don't have an overdraft then the loss increases, it would be too rich for me.

I'd speak nicely to Virgin and say you weren't aware the direct debit failed and ask nicely if they will wave the late fee and reinstate the 0% if you pay there and then.

Certainly in future I wouldn't have accepted what halifax said. A couple of times I've gone back and forth between two banks who are telling me conflicting things.

I deal with complaints quite often and I’m quite generous with redress. It would be common sense that they only try to collect DDs once.

I’d probably offer £25 max for this £100 is super generous. Virgin may let you have the 0% offer back if you ask. It’s never a good idea to run your current account that low. Try and have a few hundred buffer.

Not true. Based on the experience here, CCs often reinstate promo deals for a first "infraction".

The whole business of removing a promo deal for a late payment is, in my opinion, legally dubious. I'm sure they don't want it challenged legally, so they are up for doing deals.

So I agree with the advice: phone Virgin. Say it was a one of mistake and ask them reinstate, or at least do a compromise. If not look for a BT deal elsewhere. You could escalate the complaint with Virgin and then even the FOS if you like, but I wouldn't rate your chances.

DDs are seen as some sort of panacea on these boards. The downside is that if you mess up, you can get charges on both sides. Here, at least, you are not out of pocket with Halifax.

One thing is for sure, when you post this kind of story you can expect:

    1) The same answer multiple times as more people pile in
    2) Excessive use of bold text and CAPITAL LETTERS.
    3) An emphasis on "because you signed the T+Cs then there is nothing you can do", even though we know that's not always true!

Tells us how you get on.
