Virgin credit card cancelled 0% Interest due to returned Direct debit

I had a messaged from my Halifax bank alerting I need to pay more money to cover the payments by 14.30. Due to work i could not pay untill 4.30. I have noticed on my online account Virgin credit card D has been returned. I pas more money in to account by 16.30 and called Halifax to inquire about it. They said don't worry no charge for this and Virgin credit card will try to take the money again tomorrow. So i didn't make any attempt to call them.

Today 14.3.19 had a text message from Virgin this month payment is due. called them they said DD has been returned. They charged £18 for late payment and cancelled my 0% immediately ( Due to end sep 2020).

I called my bank and complained, the customer service advisory gave me the false information. Virgin confirmed they don't recharge the DD. They listned the complain and agreed to pay the £18 charge and £100 compensation for their wrong information. I did point out now i have lost my 0% interest. They refused to pay any compensation for the financial loss due to the wrong advice.

Any advice on this matter would be welcome. Ideally i wanted to get the 0% back. or any financial compensation from Halifax?

Thanks

  • Why are you looking at compensation when its your fault?
  • No compo due here
    Move along people
  • I do accept DD return is my fault. However i have called my bank for advice. If they would have asked me to call the Virgin, I would have so. I had the money to pay..

Just a minor point; surely if you had the money to pay the DD, then wouldn't it have been a good idea to make sure it was in the correct account ready for when the DD was due?

No compensation due here, I fear! ;)
A cunning plan, Baldrick? Whatever it was, it's got to be better than pretending to be mad; after all, who'd notice another mad person around here?.......Edmund Blackadder.

If the direct debit fails in the middle of the day, you still have time in the rest of the day to load the account, or use another, and do faster payments that nearly always arrives the same day.

OK, it's midnight now, but if you haven't done it yet even now might be better than in the morning.

Grovel with Virgin and ask them to reinstate the 0%, as although its your mistake you're only a day late, and you understand some firms have a couple of days leeway for this and forgive it the first.time.

Thank you. This was happened on 11th. I did speak to them and paid the DD. I will speak to them again and try to get the 0% back tomorrow.

You are not entitled to anything. At all. No Compo and no reinstatement of 0%.

This is because you breached the T&C's of the 0% offer.

You breached the T&C's by not having sufficient funds to collect the DD.

    That is your fault.

Virgin may re-instate 0% if you ask very nicely and grovel a lot. Don't go guns blazing, that will do nothing for you.

Neither are you entitled anything from Halifax, it's not their fault that you didn't have the funds in the bank account (they even tried to help you by telling you this).

As the previous poster says, ultimately this is YOUR mistake, you're entitled to nothing. If you speak very nicely to them they MIGHT reinstate your 0% offer.

But according to the quoted text above, they've already waived the £18 charge AND given you £100 compensation ? Blimey, what more do you want ??? In my experience, it's not unusual for a card company to waive a late payment fee and reinstate a promotional rate for a one-off mistake in a long history of otherwise unblemished payment history. But £100 compensation on top of that ? I'd count your blessings if I were you.

This is the key thing! If you're contrite and polite you'll probably get the 0% restored and the fee refunded. However, I suspect the ship might already have sailed.
