Incorrectly applied charges by O2 damaged my credit score

Hi all,
For the past few months, I have been reported to Moorcroft Debt Debt company for "not paying" my charges on my account to O2 after I terminated my account with them. In short, the charges were incorrectly applied. I have agreed for a mobile contract. however I ended up cancelling it within the 14 days trial period. They took back the phone but did not cancel the contract, so when I thought I returned back to my monthly rolling contract, I was actually on a two year contract that I did not agree on.
After few months of going back and forth between O2 and Moorcroft, it looks like they fully refunded all termination charges. However, it left a mark on my credit history. My Clear score has gone down from 435 to 130, and now it got to 201. O2 representative advised me to e-mail creditfailrefferals@o2.com to remove record of late payment from my credit history, which I did. Waiting for response now. I can see that they changed the status of late paying to "settled" but the mark is still there.
Do you know if there is anything I could do to get it completely removed from my credit history?
I have never had any late payments in my life, I've got a credit card back in October to build up my history and now suddenly I have a late payment there which is not my fault.
I'm wondering if there any legal despite I could start, as from what I read online people don't get any responses from "credit failed referrals" and knowing O2, that has literally lied to my over the phone few times, I believe that they will never reply.

If you can't resolve it, escalate to the ICO.
Note that your score will stay low one it's removed (it may even drop further) but that's absolutely fine, as it's not a measure of your credit and not used or seen by anyone.0 -
Was the contract and phone purchases online or instore?
Only contracts purchased online are subject to the 14 day cooling off period usually not ones purchased instore.
You’re lucky if that’s the case and O2 refunded the charges.0 -
Thanks zx81 and !!! for your responses.
I will see if O2 replies, if not I will contact ICO.
I'm a bit confused, if the score doesn't matter, and no one can see it, what matters on my credit history than?
!!!, I got that contract over the phone as someone from O2 offered me a "deal" and I have been informed from the start that I can cancel it within 14 days.0 -
Lenders don’t see or use the score you get from the CRA’s.
They look at the data (history) on your files and compile their own internal decisions on you based on that0
