Starling joint account

Options
I'm looking to set up a joint account for general household spending - food, kids etc. (I already have a household account set up with Natwest for most of our DDs). I like the look of Starling, but seems like both account holders also need to have Starling current accounts and neither of us really need/want to switch our sole current accounts - can we just open these sole accounts and not use them?

Don't see why not - they can't force you to use (or switch to) them and as far as I can see don't have any requirements for minimum monthly funding or DDs, etc....

I've had a Starling account for some months now - and have never ever used it.

    I have £10 in it (I think).

It might even be useful one day.

I'd love to have a Starling account but they are still not able to let people with a Raisin account also have a starling current account. Dreadful show.

Isn’t that because the Raisin account is a repackaged Starling account?

No it's not. Raisin and Starling are totally separate companies. Starling just provides a hosting platform for Raisin. Raisin is a savings gateway only. Both Raisin and Starling need your mobile phone number but Starling cannot cope with the same phone number to be used by Raisin. Terrible application design.
  • Yes you can each open a sole account then “link” them to become a joint account without switching from another bank

Yes, you can both open Starling accounts and leave them sitting doing nothing, or use them for travelling only, or switch to them and use them as your main accounts. Whatever you prefer.
Once you've both got normal accounts you can open a joint account and do whatever you want with it.

The press seems to have a slightly different view.
Raisin UK now offers account courtesy of Starling

Raisin UK, the savings marketplace, has launched the Raisin Account, as a result of the partnership with Starling Bank.

Just under a couple of months ago, Starling released its Banking-as-a-Service offering, and as announced then, Raisin was one of its first clients.

The release of this new service means that existing and new Raisin customers will get online banking services integrated into Raisin’s systems, which comes with a digital wallet.

Starling Bank expands white label banking services

Starling Bank is expanding its banking-as-a-service and payment services offerings, bringing white-label banking services to the UK.

This will allow companies to launch their own bank accounts and provide customers with payment services such as debit cards, a move that aims to inject competition into the banking market – traditionally dominated by large major banks.

Clients can pick and choose components, or product features, from Starling and as they are using Starling’s banking license, they do not need to become a regulated entity. Clients also have access to all the major payment schemes in the UK and Europe.

Starling’s clients include French challenger bank Ditto, UK’s Department for Work and Pensions, new digital bank of RBS/NatWest, and savings and investment marketplace Raisin UK.

That seems quite clear the Raisin offering is now running on Starling’s platform and is essentially a white label account.

Surely any bank offering white-labelled services should be expected not to have the account holder's mobile phone number configured as a unique key across all variants of the platform?!

Imagine the chaos if, say, Lloyds and Halifax had technical constraints that effectively precluded customers from holding accounts with both....

With Starling.... you both open individual accounts.

AFAIK = To set up a joint account, you are both logged into your accounts, sitting in the same room and then it finds the other person. Once you each agree, it will link your accounts and therefore, create a joint one.
