Help With Light Fitting

That's probably what I have and it's also why I'm here, to try and understand from real people.
If I really didn't have any clue, I'd call an electrician but I sort of understood after watching a couple of videos and from posts here. The huge amount of money an electrician will cost isn't really money saving either. Yes, it might save wiring it wrong but come on, it's 6 wires I need to put down to 3, not dealing with wiring for an electric sub station! And that's getting away from the topic any how.
But it still doesn't explain why I have two live wires that seemingly do nothing. They just connect together... which in the limited view I can see would loop them back into the ceiling. More so the current old connector has "loop" written on it.0 -
It is clear that you don't have a clue what you are doing. For the sake of £50 get an electrician in to sort it.
This will ensure you don't burn your house down.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Please just get an electrician before you hurt yourself or somebody else. If you can’t even understand something as basic as a lighting circuit and why there is a permanent feed at the light that needs to be diverted to a switch and back again then you shouldn’t be attempting this yourself.0

You need to understand the whole house electrical system & the many ways it can be arranged & how to check & test, a few videos on how to wire a light won't cut it. Get a book (eg: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B00GXFIXIM/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new) & study it, it will come in useful many times over.
When I was new homeowner I learnt everything about wiring from Practical Householder magazine & have rewired a few houses in my time. It's more complicated now & the regulations are tighter so there is more to learn.
Please be safe.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0 -

You're right, putting up a new light fitting isn't rocket science and is well within the capabilities of the average person if done with care.
What you seem to have are two cables coming out of the ceiling, one goes to the consumer unit and the other to the light switch.
I find it easier to envisage with a diagram and thinking of the electricity flowing from the consumer unit live (red in cable A below), through the closed switch, though the lamp and back to the consumer unit neutral (black in A). OK, I know that's probably bad physics but makes sense for wiring. Note though that in your case they have used the usual old style red and black twin and earth for cable C, rather than twin red and earth like in the diagram. Take care as terminals 3,4 and 5 in the diagram will still be live even when the light switch is off, so switch off the lighting circuit at the consumer unit while you are working on it.Solar install June 2022, Bath

I come here to ask how to do it.
Dont understand why people feel the need to urge an electrician when that's not what I'm asking.
However, with the help of other people and their diagrams and explanations, I've been able to do it fine without burning the house down.
Thank you.0 -
