I've always found 1and1 quite decent, although their charging does need work, I complained to them re this recently and was told they were rolling a new system soon, so that may (or may not) help.
However, i'd reccomend dreamhost.com over them really, the price is quite good, but the set of features you get are excellent.

Search for my posts pimping a 1 year discount if you're interested, it'll let you trial for one year for about $10 (easily paid via paypal t avoid currency probs)

    hope this helps somebody slightly

PS, I have current contracts with both the above, hosting the below and plenty of other stuff.

1and1 have a advert in a well known computer mag (i 4got the name ...really!)

im kinda amazed at the feedback people are leaving, seems like there really crap,. and for such a well known host'er to be so crap is.... well. . . . Crap!,.

this is not a plug at all,. but if ur looking too get a domain go with 123-reg.co.uk its run by pipex so if u dont like pipex then u wont like them, but for me its been gr8 its cheap and its simple,..can get a co.uk domain for 4£ for 2years and u can opt out of the Whois (so ur details will not be showen) ,.

then for the hosting i went to nd-hosting.co.uk ,.

    150mb space
    - 2000mb bandwidth
    - Unlimited e-mail accounts
    - Unlimited MySql Databases
    - Some other stuff :j
10£ for 1year,. the good thing with these guys is they wont pack more and more people on there severs,.

i have done all the above and have setup a site for 1year for 15£ odd pounds :T ,. (made the site my self didnt pay for a template etc etc)

It's rather worrying though that their support and status links don't work (404's).......

Last hop before their server is LI-6509-GE-2-2.ezzi.net

ezzi.net are a NY ISP, and looking at their site I guess they are reselling their packages, although it could be possible to they have their own server with ezzi.net and a service agreement. (With my last employer we owned our own web server but it was located with and managed by Netplan - only £6k a year for the service contract....)

i find a lot of hosting companies are reseller of another hosting company. how do i know who is the real hosting company?

dreamhost.com looks good! comes with a free .com domain. if i sign up for 2 years and use the 777 code, is it still US$10/year? (and 2 years for the .com domain?)

no its only for a year, after that it goes back to normal price (and i believe u hae to pay the initial fee as well)

I find 1and1 fine for their 'domain only' plans, cant beat £1.99 per year for a .co.uk domain. Just find your hosting somewhere else.

It is only for a year if you choose to pay ahead for one year of hosting, but what sombody I know did was sign up for two years initially (using the code) and i think then it was roughly $70 for two years, so about £2 a month. This seems to be because it's a cheaper monthly rate if you're signing up for two years, but that they still give you full whack discount, the same as if you were only signing up for one year.

As I understand it you don't have to pay any setup fee when you stop being on the promotion, you just roll onto a monthly plan.

Baseline is that when your initial contract period is up the price will return to their normal rate (which seems good enough that i'm expecting to stick with them) and you can either continue or cancel as you like.

is the water any less muddy? :)

they do own there own servers,. and the reason i was giving for the 404 pages,. was "where upgrading the look of the site" ,. my sites running fine with them not a problem at all u just email them for support no phone number,. emails get replyed too within the 9-5pm working day

Been with 1and1 for four years with no probs except their billing could be better. Domain name/hosting and e-mail. Just thought I'd mention this so people don't think their all bad.

    Hi

In all honestly I would stay well clear of 1 and 1 . I have had no end of trouble with them over re-newal of domains to the point where I had to get nasty with them

thier collection of card payments is farcical , I know of many people who have had the same problems over payments with them

    right mickey mouse operation
I'm starting to experience problems with them for overcharging me!
    Ben ;)
