1and1.co.uk accounts are hosted in Europe (more expensive bandwidth, labour and equipment costs).

That's like saying why is tap water more expensive in the UK than in America?!

HOWEVER, if you had said why is 1and1.de (i.e. the German site) €4.99 then your argument of rip-off Britain is correct since those are the same as the UK accounts.

Interesting, so can we in the UK use the German site (assuming we can read German of course......!)?

I just pop in now and then.... :)

    1 & 1 - dont use them

the customer service is very poor

I set up a site for £90 and although they promised the software would do the job - it didnt and they wanted to upgrade me to a bigger package

after 6 months of hell - they somehow deleted the entire site - no apology - but hours on an 0870 number - big queues etc

they did refund the money after several complaints and we lost thousands in biz

we still have domains which they dont like moving to other firms and make it very difficult to do so.

the seem to forget to invoice us and then we find the whole group of domains is frozen - we then call the 0870 scam no to find out the payment has not been taken - but they ahve the card details and no invoice was generated

we are then inundated with surveys on service

for cheap domains and no hassel try

for the best web hosts at 10% of 171 prices and 200% service

a firm I enjoy doing biz with - and if your crap at web stuff the staff are so great and show you - or do it for you

I've been registering uk domain names with them http://www.me2uweb.com. I've always had my own dedicated server, so I'm not aware of the space and bandwidth you get. But they always reply back to emails quickly. Sometimes within 5 minutes. domain £5/pa & hosting £21/pa

    Cheers

Is the domain for personal or business use, check out Freenetname who provide a domain name which can be as little as £20.00 per year (sign up for webmail service only) or they also provide quite competitive Broadband services.
Reasonable webspace is provided, with full ftp facilities, etc.
No problems in over 4 years of use, both as an ISP and webmail only.

Just in case anyone wants a good dedicated server, you can get a neat 2003 standard edition for around £630. Its at ipowerweb.com

    Cheers
