New mattress black mould

Hello i'm new to posting so sorry if i go off topic.

I brought a new bed and mattress 3 months ago and after flipping and spinning it my wife found black mould spots at head of mattress.
Contacted company we brought it from and they said it should go away by its self.
we have never had any mould problems before with our old bed but i am very concerned as all i find online is it is bad for our heath and to replace mattress but the company is not willing to help.
has anybody had any problems like this in the past and suggestions on what i should do?

Thanks.

What makes you think the mould has come from within the mattress? If it's at the head of the mattress it's more likely to come from the wall of your bedroom, probably down to poor air circulation/condensation.
  • I have checked my wall where the bed is and there is no damp or mould on wall or anywhere in my home.

I could understand if my old mattress did it but i don't know what to do.
It took so long to save for it and i can't afford another £750.

The last three months have been winter. You breathing is causing condensation which is settling on mattress. Open your windows a bit more and let fresh air in.

Is it a memory foam mattress, by any chance?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • I always leave the top windows open in bedroom and my heating has been on.
It is a normal spring mattress from carpet right but i have got a new memery foam topper that has been on it and the topper is fine.
I have been spinning the mattress each month.
It's been a week so far i have pulled it out and there is no change so been sleeping in spare room.

A mattress won't spontaneously sprout mould. As others have suggested, it is a moisture problem in your house. Address the excess moisture and improve heating and ventilation and the problem will not re-appear. However, the existing mould won't simply go away, it needs cleaning off.

I'm inclined to think there is an issue with the mattress, it isn't as though this is the first mattress ever owned by the OP so to say it needs ventilation or whatever seems to be irrelevant.

I had a damp flat many years ago, despite windows open and every attempt made to ventilate the place I had mouldy on my walls, yet my mattress, which according to some of the points above should have been mouldy, was fine.

Many years ago there was an issue with some baby mattresses being recalled due to mould, something to do with chemicals used in them, so it is possible that this could have happened again with a batch of mattresses.

I'd be taking this up with the shop and if necessary the manufacturer even going to trading standards if necessary. Mould can be very dangerous especially if continually breathed in as from a mattress.

Condensation will normally form on surfaces that are cooler than the air temperature in the room (surfaces such as windows and external walls that aren't too well insulated.
I occasionally get a lot of condensation forming on the inside of my bedroom windows and I've never once had any problem with mould on the mattress or any other furnishings or walls.

I would be more inclined to think that the mattress became slightly damp when it was in storage before the OP bought it.

Thank you all for your help carpetright got back in touch and said i would have to find and pay for a independent bed inspection before they will look into it which i think is unfair as they say all beds come with a 10 year guarantee .
