My passport has expired but I need to work a contract in RoI the week after next for a while. I could get an expedited passport but it will end up costing £300 all told. So if I get the ferry from eg Cairnryan and train or bus south, would I face any checks? Thanks

Technically you do not need any ID so long as you were born in either the UK or Ireland. In practice you may need something to demonstrate this: an expired passport should do the trick.

There would be no checks if you go via that route.

You can get a passport pretty quickly, if you want to make sure you've covered the options; I think mine took 10 days when I did it online last year.

When you say work the week after next, for a while....

    How long is a while?

I’m not up to speed on Bretit (I know right!)

But if Ireland becomes an eu state - will that affect things?

Or is that what the whole backstop thing is about?

If you are a British Citizen, you do not need a passport for entry into Eire

There is no hard border, there are no checks

Airlines do require a form of ID, we usually use our driving licence, Ryanair is the exception to the rule, they insist on a passport

British nationals travelling from the UK don't need a passport to visit Ireland. However, Irish immigration officers will check the ID of all passengers arriving by air from the UK and may ask for proof of nationality, particularly if you were born outside the UK
