You don't need a whole cage, you can use one of these and the Smart meter will be no more dangerous than if it was disconnected altogether:

Ah, tachyons, those little bu**ers that move faster than the speed of light.
Ordered two, as I have a smart electric and gas meters. Wonder how quick they'll get here?
Can remove Flopsy from the microwave too, as I don't think she really likes it, and there's rabbit !!!!!! everywhere.

I don't know if the long term effects of these are fully known as they simply have not been around long enough, much of the publicity could be causing anxiety and people will think the smart meters to blame if they feel unwell, certainly I wouldn't like the hub close to me twenty four hours a day however.

Foil is an idea but I was wondering if a supplier would class that as tampering with an instalation as a meter reader would likely report the presence of foil or other gizmo attached to a meter/hub in an outside box resulting in customer contact.

The radiation from the meter will be no greater than that from a mobile phone.

Any meter mounted in an outside cabinet will be radiating very little RF into the house.

Your mobile phone kept in your top pocket will create a far higher local RF field that a smart meter some metres away.

A mobile phone in your trouser pocket is probably slowly sterilising you, so make sure you decide to have kids whilst you still can.

Most people dont actually walk around with a smart meter attached to their ears or in their pockets so it's more than likely that you will receive get significantly more radiation from a mobile phone than you are from a smart meter mounted in a fixed position somewhere in your house.

As I said above, if you are worried about radiation, stop using all the technology that you carry around and just put up with the radiation from everyone else.

I'm impressed that the yanks have got the pricing about right, our stuff was far too cheap to be effective. People have to pay a decent amount to feel that they are getting something worthwhile.

I'm sure they are equally effective anywhere in the world!

The radios in smart meters (and mobile phones) may be relatively recent, but human exposure to man-made radio isn't new, and exposure to the sun is older still.

Phones and meters put out tenths of Watts of power, the sun bathes the earth in 700W/m² much of it in the actually harmful high energy UV range, and yet humans not only survive but thrive in it. We're evolved for it.

The mental energy spent worrying about the effects of smart meter transmissions on human health would be better spent on figuring out how to mitigate the effects of proven health risks, such as Diesel particulates.
For example, instead of driving a meter reader round to everyone's house to get a reading, burning hydrocarbons all the way, transmit the reading directly over the air to the supplier! Swapping one trivial risk for another significantly more trivial risk.

Excellent comment - worry about whats important not about trivia and look at the other consequences
