Virgin Atlantic ~ Name Change

Pretty annoyed this morning at both Expedia & Virgin Atlantic.
I booked a trip for myself and Mother (78 years old) to go to Las Vegas for a once in a lifetime trip, through Expedia.
Unfortunately my Mother has suffered a heart attack and require bypass surgery. She therefore will no longer be fit and well enough to make the trip.
I contacted both Expedia and Virgin Atlantic and explained the above circumstances. Both denied my request and advised that nothing could be done, except purchase new tickets for another family member to attend.
Anyone had similar and been able to get somewhere?
Thank you.

Claim on your travel insurance, that's what it's for.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Surely this is one for your insurance company.0

Thank you however I booked the trip on the 03/12/18 and my mother suffered the heart attack/surgery on morning of 04/12/18. Therefore no travel insurance in place for my Mother, as head in shed following weeks.0

when were you planning on booking travel insurance? You really should book it as soon as you have committed costs (eg non refundable flights), as it covers instances such as this in the lead up to the holiday, it doesn’t just cover the days you are actually away.Save £12k in 2019 #360

that is pretty standard. You will struggle to find many full service airline that allow name changes.
She should be able to claim some whatever the fare rules of the ticket state are refundable - usually some taxes.
If the flight is some time away, you could hope there is a schedule change that allows cancellation (slim chance but nothing to lose)0 -
Hope your mother is ok
Not sure your annoyance should be directed at expedia and Virgin, it should be directed at yourself for not having insurance in place.0 -
Important point, it’s a passenger change, not a name change. Stops the speculators taking advantage.Legal team on standby0
