Slow speeds

Options
i recently had plusnet out to repair an internal fault, prior to this my speeds were great, no idea what they were but pages loaded in a second
since the repair (the engineer fitted a socket with a built in filter - ive never used a filter) my speeds are awful, takes 5 seconds to load a page - plusnet said theyve tested them and they are within 'my package speeds'
dont see what i need a filter for and want my old speeds back!
any ideas???

How is your new socket different to the old one? (Presumably you mean the BT Master socket)
BT sockets nowadays all come with an inbuilt filter, see all the types here:

    https://btbusiness.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/15770/~/how-do-i-identify-what-type-of-socket-i-have%3F/c/5108/

    What was the "internal fault?"
Are you on FTTC or ADSL? (Fibre or not?) If you are using broadband and landline, I would expect that your socket is either the left or right one from the lower row of 3 images. You should have a cable for Phone and another for the router. If you had the older socket, you were lucky to have no problems without an inline filter fitted.

Use www.speedtest.net to check your speeds and tell us what your Download and Upload speeds are in Mbps. Noting the Ping would also be useful, but not strictly necessary.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

As Robisere has said, without a filter you would have had problems with noise on the phone, if you had a phone installed, and possible problems on broadband, Existing microfilters can result in much lower speeds than when a filtered faceplate is fitted. So the engineer has done the correct thing and installed the new type socket.

So as Robisere has asked what service are you on, FTTC or ADSL, ADSL+2 . If you provide this information , along with the suggested speed check, we might be able to help further.

WiFi channel is users choice not the ISPs/
Diffrent housholds may require a different channel or a better channel .1 6 11 are the usual.

I find it surprising how many people still don't have any understanding of the difference between wifi connection speed and internet connection speed.
Recently I sorted out a neighbour's "rubbish" connection for him by doing as above -changing wireless channel. His internet connection was fine as I proved to him by connecting my laptop by cat 5 cable.

What it needs is for the ISPs (particularly those who supply pre/remote configured routers) to issue a "Internet connection for Dummies" document -but I suppose few would read it or keep it:(

Exactly what the OR tech said again yesterday .
Internet 100% at the box but Facebook is slow.So yet another wasted callout with potential £150 ish charge to the customer .

might be worth looking for a local pc techie, go to a local PC shop (not a chain store) and ask their advice, they normally have someone reliable they send with PCs to install - since local PC shops live and die by reputation you should be ok. For the love of all that is holy dont go to PC world etc. They would be cheaper and set up your system at home properly.
