Suppliers will fit a check gas meter to test for a faulty gas meter ..Expensive gamble though if it turns out to be normal. They charge over £100..No charge if meter is found to be faulty
The OP says they paying £500/month while their neighbours in similar houses are paying £175/moth. If I were in that situation & thought that there might be a meter problem then £100 would be a small price to pay to confirm/deny the issue considering they are paying several times that each month & have apparently been doing so for years.

The OP doesn't say what sort of house they have but by way of comparison we have a large detached Victorian 4 bedroom house with partial double-glazing & good loft insulation with gas central heating. Our monthly energy bill is about £350/month split 2:1 between gas & electricity.

Has the OP checked his consumption figures with his neighbours as well to see if he's using vastly more energy (eithe gas or leccy) rather than paying vastly more money.

Most people concentrate on what they pay without actually understanding what they are using.

Doing a bit of detective work by analysing your consumption by reading the meters more often and understanding whats using it and when is far more productive than waiting for a bill and then asking next door how much they are paying and whinging about yours.

If you don't monitor it you can't control it. When you've got it under control you can then make sure that you are on the best tariff to suit.

Our bills for energy are 500 pounds per month... They are fitting a smart meter
all calculations are correct we have asked this.

£6000 per year is, err, a lot. You should have sorted this sooner. "we have asked this" - as a minimum you should take readings/photos yourself on a regular basis. You can start by taking readings the DAY BEFORE the smart meter(s) is put in; if the gas usage goes down significantly AFTER smart meter put in, come back here.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

OP......"we feel that we have been paying way too much for years"

a girl at work has recently had this situation. How big is your water tank?. It turns out the builder fitted one suitable for a 4 bed house in her 2 bed apartment

I'd second all this. My _annual_ fuel bill is not much more than half your monthly bill (courtesy of solar panels and a wood burner, I should add!) but I still keep an eye on actual readings. Only yesterday I did a check so that my next bill won't be a surprise and to make sure nothing untoward is happening (like leaving an immersion heater on).

Incidentally I pay on receipt of bill, which I realise is not for everyone, but it avoids companies deciding what to take from my account, and it concentrates the mind to avoid unexpectedly large winter bills!
  • Are you paying £500 every month of the year ? If so, your winter usage must be astronomical !

You keep saying the readings are right BUT HAVE YOU ACTUALLY LOOKED AT THE METER?

Given that your supplier says it's an old meter, have you checked that the bill is being made up IN THE SAME UNITS AS DISPLAYED ON THE METER?

Is the bill in M3 (cubic meters) but the meter says FT3 (cubic feet) or similar, or the other way round?

Do you have a small leak somewhere, have you checked?
  • Update. We have had new a meter installed and it seems the meter was faulty old and over working !!! But get this. THEY HAVE LOST OUR OLD METER !! so they don’t know what to do at the moment ! How have they lost our meter that they took away in a locked box ! We have taken a reading for gas today and it looks like we have only used 150 pounds worth in the month so we have being massively overpaying for years has anyone had experience of claiming off energy companies?
