If I was locked in a house and the first thing I'd be doing would be trying to find a suitable window to break.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Call 101 and discuss the situation with them.

As long as the OP is aware that the Police take a much more robust view of wasting their time than this forum.

….you would however be hard pushed to find a copper that deems false imprisonment and intimidation (of 8 blokes in their prime) a waste of their time....

It sounds like a scene from the Hangover films.

Booking off Air bnb was a bad idea from the offset, why do that. Next bad move was not to call the police (which I still dont understand) and third was leaving the licence behind.

    Easy targets you were.

This could end up a good story keep it going! No one to mention service days at school or any school holiday. I have popcorn.

Part two will be thugs turning up to demand the rest of the balance. What should he do? Possibly including a poll with options including "hand over the cash" or "join a forum to ask what to do".

Contacting the police will not be a poll option.

The person foolish enough to leave their drivers license needs to get it cancelled immediately.

I'm unsure about the legality of their actions in the first place.
kidnapped and held to ransom and you're unsure if it was legal or not?

I would say (apart from the bizarre and illegal turn of events) you are about where you should be.

An agreement of £150 for the carpet seems fair as you admit it was one of you that damaged it (and between 8 of you is nothing).

So I would contact the owner (I assume you still have their details from airbnb?), tell them you are not paying any more and you want the driving license back. You have taken advice which suggests the actions of the owners employees were illegal and have contacted the police. If you do not receive the license back and hear no more about this you will pursue with legal action.
