HELP! Court Summons from MIB 5 years after incident - Address changed

Hello everyone,
I am in need for some advice please. It will be appreciated.

In 2014, i had a small accident (bumped into a taxi from the back at a roundabout) in manchester. I was uninsured at the time. I was visited by the MIB (Motor insurers bureau), the gentleman took my statement, viewed my car, took photos and assured me i had nothing to worry about based on the fact that there was no damage to my car. I had literally just touched the taxi from a stanmdstill at the roundabout.

Anyways, i did not hear from MIB or anyone again for over a year after which i moved to Dublin in 2015.
Now 5 years down the road, my previous manchester landlord handed me some of my mail which had gone to the address.
In this mail i have found debt collectors letters asking me to pay £10,000 for a claim paid out by MIB. there is also a very recent court summons issued in regards to this.

I am at a total loss and shock. I do not know what to do from here and how to go about fighting this. There is no way i can afford to pay £10,000 and especially not knowing why this was paid.

Is there anyone who can advise on what steps i should take and how i can come to the bottom of this?

I am assuming i will get a CCJ if i dont respond to the court summons?

Many thanks

Do you still live in Dublin? Do you plan to return to the UK?

Taxi driver will have put in a PI claim and probably some fictitious repair bills, add in the various costs of chasing and escalation and you get that sum.

Yes you will get a CCJ if you don't pay the sum within 30 days of the judgement.

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

See citizens advice or a solicitor asap.

Unfortunate that you chose a taxi to hit (loss of use, loss of earnings, expensive hire, probably several non-existent passengers with sore necks....)

Daft that you didn't have insurance.

Take the papers to a solicitor asap.

Is it slightly under or slightly over £10k? The rules change for claims over £10k so this may be significant.

The court claim form amount is as follows:

    Amount claimed - £10054.80
    Court fee - £452.47
    Legal representatives costs - £100
    Total amount £10607.27

Doctor possibly said take some paracetamol and keep your neck warm, so he took some paracetamol and booked a 4 week trip to the bahama's to keep his neck warm whilst they checked his car over.

Ouch. If this goes to court and you lose you could be hit with further costs. Over £10k the winning party can claim a good chunk of their legal costs back. The £100 so far will just be for the lawyer to submit the claim.

See a solicitor. The small outlay now may well be worth it. It is possible to enforce judgements abroad so even if you stay in Dublin at that amount it's worth them chasing you for it.

Should i contact MIB and see what they say? explain the situation as to why i havent responded due to move and see if they can stop the court claim?

You should certainly open dialogue with them. That and speak to a solicitor. It might be worth seeing one before contacting the MIB
