when you first turned the pc you would have had a option to make a recovery CD/DVD.
to get into the recovery program there is some ways
ATL-F10 (which you had tried)and Ctrl-F10 or just F10 all done before it booots in to windows
the invalid product key is because you are trying to run a different version to the one your key supports you need to return the OS back to the on that matches your key ,that the code underneath your laptop ,it will say what version it for (home basic)there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0 -
HOW TO BAIL YOU OUT OF TROUBLE TEMPORARILY.
Do the following:
1:start up vista normally
2:choose reduced mode to buy a key online
3:Internet explorer will open, type "c:" without the quotes in the address bar.
4:Screen pops up, type "cmd" in the address bar.
5:Navigate to windows/system32 directory (type cd \windows\system32 at command prompt ) and type slmgr.vbs -rearm at command prompt.
6:Wait a few seconds, a command successfull screen will follow.
7:Reboot, windows will tell you have 30 days left to install.
8:Presto, you are back in Vista.
This will give you 30 days to create a restore CD if the option is there or to back up your documents and settings before re-installing Vista Home Basic.0 -

When I type in the last prompt I don't get a successful screen, I get an error message saying access denied, requested action requires elevated privileges.0 -
Do you mean something like this? http://www.download.com/Product-Key-Finder/3000-2094_4-10736781.html?tag=lst-4
Tried this and it gives me my original product key which is on the side of the unit, when I type this in the product key box it just comes up as invalid.
I asked my son if there was recovery discs in the box and he said no.0 -
Have you tried the suggestion in post #21?0

When you turn the computer on press F2 to enter the bios setup.
Then go to the Main Menu.
Change the setting D2D Recovery to Enabled.
Press F10 and choose Yes to save the change and exit the bios.
That's how it's done on my Acer Extensa 5610 so there's a good chance it'll be the same, the original system should now be resored. You may need to change the D2D Recovery setting back to disabled after the restore.
Tried this and F2 does nothing, so went into Bios set up and I haven't got D2D Recovery option.
Looks like I'm gonna have to pay Acer to restore it for me.
Thanks anyway to everyone who tried to help.

Of course it won't work, the Key is for the OEM version of Windows Vista Basic.0 -
Firstly give your son a slap!
Then tell him to get hold of a copy of Vista Home Basic and install it on your machine using the license key you have.
He should be able to download a copy using a well known application that we're not allowed to discuss on here.
Or if he knows someone who has a copy he could borrow it.It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0
