Online Banking - Opinions wanted please!

Hi

I really want online banking as it would be so much easier for me.

I'm with Halifax but everytime my husband and I set online banking up we cannot access Direct Debits or Standing Order information. When we contact Halifax we're told we need to re-set it up!

Who are good for online banking? Are smile any good? I do not want to go to HSBC or Natwest after a bad experience with business banking.

Our circumstances are that my husband and I pay in about £800 a month at the moment. We have average credit scores. We currently pay £10 a month for the Halifax bank account upgrade.

Can anyone sugguest anything as I would rather go on a reccomendatioon from you lovely guys.

  • Nicci, I regularly use the websites of LTSB & Nationwide B.S. & I have found them both to be excellent.

I have a LTSB Cash Plus account which pays interest of 4.25% up to £2,500 & 0.1% on higher balances. Standing Orders & Direct Debits can be viewed & amended online. All your LTSB accounts can be viewed assuming you have other accounts eg.Regular Saver etc.

On the Nationwide website I can view my FlexAccount, ISAs & Credit Card accounts. I can view & amend various payments etc. There are tiered rates of interest depending on how much you pay into your account each month.

ASAP tell Halifax you dont want their £10 per month current account and they should change the account back to the ordinary current account. Fee paying current accounts are (usually) a complete rip off.
First Direct seems to get the most recommendations for ease of use and customer service though their interest rates are nothing special. Smile also get good reviews for their customer service.
FWIW Nationwide have my main current account as they pay slightly more interest on their linked e-savings account and they do not charge a fee for foreign currency transactions... but their customer service isnt always the best. For Nationwide you can do almost everything via internet banking so only very rarely need to contact CS.

The only reason i got the £10 a month account was there was a huge written sign when we went in a few months ago saying 'If you have a Halifax current account talk to an advisor ASAP' so we spoke to an advisor who told us the current accounts were being changed.

Isn't everyone going to start charging soon?

With First Direct would I get charged the monthly fee as I wouldn't be paying in more than £1500 a month? I cannot make out their small print (leaflet arrived through the postbox today for them)

Another vote for Nationwide online banking. It's a really good service and straightforward to use.

My 'main' personal account is with HSBC. I have an online facility as well as the standard branch facility and it's fantastic.

    There's also no charge.

My current & savings accounts are with Cahoot and they are great! The current a/c pays 3.75% and the savings 5.75%. I could probably get a little more, but am happy with the service I receive. The website is dead easy to negotiate and changing over to them nearly 4 years ago was very straightforward.

I have been let down badly by Smile and their customer service was not good. They don't pay brilliant rates of interest either.

Sounds as if you were subject to miss selling - paying a monthly fee is optional (atm anyway!)

If you have any other First Direct product, they waive the £10 fee. Any other product includes a credit card or a savings account with £1 in it..

I use HSBC for my main current account but Nationwide is ok too.. (if a bit slow sometimes)

    Regards

I have approx 10 accounts 'online' with Halifax. My OH has a similar number - and I run 5 accounts online , with them, for my Mother.

For all those accounts - there are absolutely no problems viewing / setting up / amending SOs. And equally no problems viewing / amending DDs.

Are you sure (as the current a.c) you're not misunderstanding something about the online system? If your account SOs and DDs work 'offline' - then they work online as well. It's not a different system - just your view of it.

  • Nationwide has been great... until this month. Now it's an absolute nightmare logging on and their customer service people refuse to recognise the problem. So I would think twice before joining up if I was you. See here for more details.
  • I use Halifax and Tesco without a problem.
The £10 monthly charge is a rip off.
