I may not understand every aspect of car insurance, but that’s the reason why I asked. How else am I to no unless I ask Or read about it, but I never intended on being involved in an accident, although they do happen everyday this is the first I’ve ever been involved in, this is why I was seeking advice. But it seems some are more keen on filling you with worry and doubt rather than actually trying to help and telling me that I spend hundreds of pounds on a service I don’t understand, having car insurance isn’t exactly optional. I only explained the accident so that people could give me advice on the renewal of my insurance policy with this unsettled issue. I wasn’t seeking advice on the accident, I was explaining what the unsettled issue was and seeking advice on how it’ll effect my new insurance policy.

    That's fairly straightforward:

If you're found to be entirely at fault, your insurance will pay out, you will have a fault claim which you will have to declare for up to five years and it's almost certain that your premiums will rise.

If you're found to be partially at fault, your insurance will pay out your share of the costs, you will have a fault claim which you will have to declare for up to five years and it's almost certain that your premiums will rise.

If you're found to be blameless, the other party's insurance will pay out, you will have a non-fault claim which you will have to declare for up to five years and it's very likely that your premiums will rise.

Yeah I completely understand that, but the issue isn’t resolved and my insurance is up for renewal, I’m not staying with the same insurance company as we have had cheaper quotes else where. So the advice I was seeking was if I needed to tell my new insurer and If so what do I tell them. As I was doing my insurance online i wasn’t able to find anything on their website to declare an accident where the outcome has not yet been determined.

You will need to declare that you have a claim unsettled.

It will likely mean that your new insurer will quote you as having made a claim. If the claim is settled in your favour I would then expect them to refund the difference between a fault claim and a non fault claim.

I take it the company you are with know about your accident and outstanding claim and have priced the renewal accordingly. The cheaper ones don't know but once you tell them they will put their quotes up.

You need to declare it as a claim. It's currently unresolved so will be currently classed as an "at fault" claim. There should be a place where you can declare this on your proposal.

Exactly. Unless there's a still a big price difference, I'd suggest staying with the current insurer until the claim is resolved.

No problem, thanks for the help. I’ll call them tomorrow to declare it, I just done a quote there and put it down as if it where settled and I where at fault just to check the price difference and it’s still reasonably cheaper than our current insurer, but I’ll call them tomorrow and tell them everything and check what the price would be then. Thank yous

But it seems you also failed to see the bus before opening the door, or if you saw it you misjudged the clearance.

Seeing as the OP was already in the car with the door almost closed, it's not at all any fault with the OP. The door would have already been open wider than it was, and / or the OP would have been beside the car about to get in as the bus approached. I doubt the OP could have got beside the car, opened the door and got in all at once as the bus was passing without the bus driver seeing.

As per usual we have only one side of the story. It would appear that the bus driver may have a different account of this incident.

If as OP suggested this incident is recoded on the bus video, I feel sure the bus company will have reviewed this before determining OP was at fault.
