Turning off water

Not directly related to billing, but hopefully you can advise me.
I’m going on holiday and I have been advised to switch off my waters at the main ?
My main tap !!!! stop is located in my garage, so today I thought I’ll just do a demo switch off, to make sure I know what I’m doing, Rather than do this for the first time at 4am about to leave.

So I successfully closed the tap (genius that I am lol)
Turned on my tap in the kitchen - result no water. Ok great.

But when I turn it back on I forgot the advice you follow - turn the tap fully open, then turn it in the close direction... like a 1/4 turn...

Some one advise please ?

And is turning it off the right thing to do ....

I think I understand what you are asking and yes it sounds like you are doing it right, when turing the water back on open all the way then turn back off a bit this reduces the chance of the spindle seizing.

After you have the mains off make sure the heating is ok if you're leaving it on, and if it is to protect against damage from leaks open all the taps to get a drain down.

Thank you, yes I turned it off, then opened my taps to release what was left in the pipes.. do I need to turn on every tap to drain it after switching off the water... or will just the kitchen sink do for example?
