We have decided to move away from Sky and found a very competitive price from BT. BT were prepared to pay up to £300 costs for terminating our Sky contract and needed proof of this when payment had been made. however, after speaking to the retention team at Sky they have told us that we cannot end our contract and make a one off payment. The monthly payments will just have to continue until the end of the contract period. This then obviously stops us from accepting the BT offer as Sky will NOT terminate the contract. Is this legal ?

It's unusual because generally companies are happy to charge you their early-termination penalty and bid you farewell. However, if they choose not to do that, and that is consistent with the wording of your contract, then there isn't a great deal you can do.
To work out the full legalities of it would require reviewing the wording of your contract, together with an understanding of any applicable OFCOM rules.0
