Item damaged in transit with Global Shipping

Hi,

I sold a DVD recorder and sent it to Spain using the Global Shipping programme.

The buyer now tells me it's faulty showing the hard drive is damaged (code on the screen). This was working perfectly when I sent it so I assume it was damaged in transit.

I've contacted ebay but they say nothing they can do unless the packaging is clearlyl damaged (which wont be because it was very well packaged).

The postage to send it back from Spain costs me about £20 and if the item is broken this is wasted money. (even if it's not the item is not worth much more than that..)

Is there anything I can do??

Thanks

    That doesn't make sense.

If it was damage in transit, despite being very well packed, then there should be some heavy impact damage to the box, or a clear 'squash'

I dont understand why you are so certain it won't show box damage...

I have asked the buyer but I think he should have mentioned it if it was?

Unfortunately if the packaging isnt damaged, and the item was sent in working order and arrives broken, then the packaging will be deemed as insufficient to protect it.

    GSP re-package before onward journey.

The damaged bit is the hard drive, nothing will be visible outside... but now I'm losing the money and the item because it's too costly to return and I have to pay for the postage from spain...

A hard drive can easily be damaged by a box being dropped, especially if a good strong box - and the box may not show much (if any) damage if it lands square on an edge.

Hard disks are notoriously fragile to impact damage/jarring.

Shouldn't this be covered under GSP insurance? I believe GSP buyers pay extra insurance but not 100% sure on this.

I talked with someone from ebay today and they told me if the package doesn't show damage there's nothing they can do.. seems very unfair, like you say it was probably dropped...

Insurance is for buyes, not sellers.

    Only occasionally.

Phone eBay again and get them to look at their own policies. If buyer opens an SNAD and states item was damaged en route you can argue their courier has damaged it.

I posted a thread about this recently I'll try and find it.

Ask the buyer to open a returns request on the basis it is damaged. Once open it will ask you to respond and will send you to ebay in the buyer's home country to do so. Ignore this and find the return under your account as it will then be in English.

There will be an option to refuse the return and then a further option to hold the GSP responsible. Do not accept the return as you would then have to provide a pre-paid postage label.

The two buyers I dealt with opened return requests rather than SNAD cases. In one case the GSP refunded in full, with the other case ebay in the buyer's home country partially refunded him out of their funds.

I spoke to ebay again, they said the courier won't take any responsibility if the package wasn't damaged, and it wasn't , it was perfect.

Also I accepted the return and this cannot be undone.. so I think the only thing i can do is to accept that I've lost my money and my item.
