Looks odd that the surface has all come off in one place whilst looking like new in another.
Here is a picture of what worn bonded leather looks like. It leaves a dandruff like covering on the carpet!

Hence why the question arose if I was sold a faux leather missold as a bonded leather

'Bonded Leather' borders on being a fraudulent description. It is utter rubbish, no thicker or stronger than a spray coating and in some cases starts to wear off after a mere few months. 'Faux Leather' is more honest. Although its sellers like to use a French word to describe it instead of plain English, the translations (Collins English/French Dictionary) are 'false, untrue, insincere, sham, faked' which adequately describe the product. Most purchasers will realise that it is fake leather, and probably much more hard wearing than the disgraceful 'bonded leather', as are fabric and vinyl coverings.

Thank you. This is useful. So really the bonded leather is to avoid then? It is worse than the faux leather...

We paid almost £300 for a bonded leather swivel chair and footstool from a large Department Store chain which Mr Mike Ashley is currently trying to snap up. It started peeling in less than a year and is now an awful mess covered with a throw. The wooden base and mechanical parts are still perfect. A formal complaint was a waste of time. I've since seen various reviews by disgruntled customers of that and other retailers who've innocently fallen for this useless stuff along with the characteristic pictures of the usual peeling. Avoid it at all costs. Anything has to be better than that.

I bought the same one but paid £200. Its about 4/5yrs old and looks a right mess but, as you say, still works fine and is very comfortable.
At the time I was considering an Ekornes Stressless for about £1,200 but was tempted by something very similar looking for 1/6th of the price so it would not matter if it broke after a few years. I can't wait for it to break.
