Seems you can register/maintain a .eu domain from anywhere in the world by becoming an e-Resident of Estonia (!). Details here.
Small drawback - the registration fee is €100.

A few years ago Estonia was busy promoting its electronic residents ID system to all and sundry.
Some were taken in by the claims

Those of us of a more cynical persuasion were just waiting for it all to go wrong
Sure enough it was hacked and the security flaw exposed.

We don't hear much about it now.....

No doubt Estonia will mange EU domains of foreigners as well as they managed the money laundering activities of Danske bank Estonian branch - that is to say anything and all fraud is just fine and ignored.

Regarding the link posted by glennevis, I've now read all the info and is so hard to get my head around it. Seems my only option is to register a random EU address, but there's talk of a new eu framework coming this year that might help EU citizens living in the UK (but not UK citizens?!).

The people that keep coming up with these little annoyances tend to forget there are companies in the EU using .co.uk domains.

I buy items from a company in Germany through their .co.uk site. They have no UK address but someone in the company monitors the UK site and replies back in English where the .de site gets a google translated style of reply.

Obviously different people managing each domain/sales.

Must they now delete their .co.uk domain?

    Just scaremongering and stupidity.

I hope that's the case, forgotmyname. Hope it's all bluff.

Them forcing UK companies/individuals to lose their online eu homes could result in EU companies/individuals losing their online uk homes as a counter measure.

I forgot they have been using our co.uk domain.

Each TLD registrar is free to have whatever registration rules they wish. Nominet do not limit .uk registrants to those living in the UK and I doubt whether that will change.

.eu has always had the limitation that the registrant must reside within the EEA. So it means that somebody living here who currently has an .eu domain would have to give it up if they moved to the USA. It is no different when a whole country moves out of the EEA.

Brexit itself hasn't caused this, it is merely one of the side effects of no longer being within the EEA. No doubt there are other things that rely on membership of the EEA and they will come to light in due course.

The industry as a whole has been quite shocked at the EUs stance on this.
Everyone who I know thought the EU would allow 'grandfather' domains to be kept.

I don't know if they are planning on using this as a bargaining chip in the negotiations, but the answer is that you must register an EU address and transfer the domain there if you want to keep it.

It sucks, but blame the EU for their ideological instead of practical stance.

If I was to pick a random address is there a safe way in doing so, or should I just cross my fingers and choose one? I wouldn't want to register an address belonging to a fraudster for example.

Maybe I could register a church address lol?

I'm hoping this, but the email says...

"1/ If you HAVE a European postal address:
Update your domain contact details so that your European address is registered. This way, you will be able to keep your domain and secure it from being taken by your competition. You can do this straight from your control panel - log in now to update your details and keep your .eu domain.

2/ If you DO NOT HAVE a European postal address:
Unfortunately, you will not be able to keep your .eu domain name once Britain leaves the EU, this could be as soon as March 29th in the event of no-deal Brexit. We recommend that you transfer your site to a new domain to keep your business running as usual during the Brexit transition and beyond."

Then when I emailed the register in panic got the reply...

"In order to still keep your .eu domain(s) with us, you will need to change the address details to ones that are in an EU country.

I cannot tell you for sure right now as there are many things that will happen and until we will receive an update on this whole situation I cannot either state or deny what will or will not happen."

You will still have a European postal address. We are leaving the EU, not being towed off into the middle of the Pacific.

You're right to point that out. It seems they're blurring the line between being European and being in the EU.
