Broadband Fibre speeds

After 2 months of conversations with Talktalk 'Customer Service' We have finally been told the truth. On moving to Fibre broadband after a cabinet update, we were guaranteed a MINIMUM speed of 42.9Mbps. This has never been achieved so we have been querying it since 27th December and kept being told it WAS reaching the minimum.

At last today a Talktalk manager told us that we will not achieve speeds of more than 70% of the guaranteed minimum speed (about 29Mbps) over wifi!

This appears nowhere in their adverts or in the paperwork sent with our order. And we feel Talktalk have been more dishonest by not explaining this to us when we first made our query.

The manager promised they were looking to re-word adverts after customer 'feedback'.

Let's see how that goes!

I'm not aware of any company that guarantees minimum speeds over WiFi as the variables are far too many. Are you saying that Talktalk do advertise this?

As above minimum is never measured over wifi . Far to many reasons for wifi to be lower.

Broadband speeds are measured to the router. It shouldn't have taken TT very long to clarify the difference between that and speeds over wifi.

You need to plug a pc directly into a port on the back of your router with a cable connection to get a valid reading.

As mentioned above, there are too many variables when taking readings via wifi.

They only guarantee the line rate, the speed at which the router syncs with the equipment in the fibre cabinet.

Throughput speeds cannot be guaranteed, WiFi has many variables and is subject to interference.

Even with a LAN connection, the speed of the network card and computer performance can be limiting as one TT member found recently according to the web board, his sync speed was 80 Mbps but throughput was less than 30, it was 75 with a friend's new laptop.

As for their assertion about WiFi speeds, I can get a speed test result of 49/20 on a 50/20 REAL fibre connection here in Thailand, so this 70% estimate is just a smokescreen.
