First step would be to do something basic reading. Try John Edwards - DIY Simple Investing.

Don't, unless you know what you are doing. Like MallyGirl said, read the John Edwards book to learn about how to invest in markets in a straightforward way. That might raise some specific questions you could ask here.0

What got me comfortable enough knowledge wise to get started with investing was reading both the Monevator website and JL Colins website, the later more US centric, however the underlying principles will serve you well.0
