We were thinking of joining National Trust for a year, never realised how expensive it is. Any tips on getting discounts on membership.

It comes down to the old question off how much use you will make of the membership. If its only a few visits a year then individual entrance charge is your best bet.
On the other hand, if you go for membership then this will encourage to visit more places in order to get your moneys-worth.0 -
