The more I read, the more confused I get. I am with Virginmedia for bb, tv and line rental. I pay £53.45 a month for the basic package (Mix tv, Vivid 100 Optical and Talk Weekends). It says I get up to 100 mbps download speed. I have a V6 box.
I don't use my landline but seems you still have to pay for the line.
I want to be able to use the internet. There's only me checking emails, social media and searching information on the internet (occasional youtube videos a few minutes long - not films).
I want to ditch the tv part and get Netflix instead. I can get BBC1 and 2, Itv, C4 and C5 on my tv anyway and don't bother much with the other channels other than a couple of film channels.
Virgin are giving me 100 mbps. All the others seem to be offering around 30 mbps. Why do they not offer more? Will I notice much difference?
The new user offers I've looked at are around £30 a month so with Netflix at around £10, I'll be saving £13 a month.
Could someone please clarify the download speeds and does anyone have any suggestions for what I should go for?
Thank you for any help.

Landline is not a phone line .
Its the line that provides broadband etc .You rent this line .
Not sure who these 30 meg others are .
Fact
VM supply services over their own private high speed network.
Other supplier use the Bt OpenReach cable with 30 meg 52 meg and 76 meg max speeds depending upon line quality .
Key here is what do you want .
52 meg looks plenty for you .
Are you out of contract with VM ??
If so or nearly then use the BB checker top of the page .0 -
Three mobile 4g data unlimited just £20pm. Get a Mifi or use an old phone as a tether and job done. Should get over 50mbps and 5G rollout from mid 2019 onwards.0

Even 5 mbps is fast enough for Netflix unless you're watching in 4k so you shouldn't notice any difference. 25 mbps is fast enough for 4k streaming.
If you have a good Three 4G signal in your area, you could get Three HomeFi for £22 a month which includes unlimited data. As you mentioned you don't use your landline anyway. If Netflix is £9.99 per month then the total cost of HomeFi and Netflix would be about £32 per month which is over £20 cheaper than your Virgin Media package.0 -
best thing to do is ring virgin on 150.
press option, you are thinking of leaving for other reason.
tell them its too expensive, you don't need tv and nowtv will do fibre 40mbps for £25.
Say you know it will be slower but fine for you.
See if they can match the price, don't rush and say yes.
It's often cheaper to keep the phone with virgin, but get rid of tv.
If its still not cheap enough, ask to go onto the 50mbps package.
check the contract online within 14 days, and if its not what you agreed, contact them for amendment within 14 days, otherwise you are tied in for a year0 -
Thank you all for your replies.
JJ Egan, you learn something new every day. I thought it was a phome line. lol I am out of contract.
Worried Jim, what is a mifi? Is it mobile wifi?
Marvqn1, I don't know if there is 4G in this area. I'll check it out.
AndyPK, I did ring Virgin and was told the only change they could give me was less speed for £2 a month less.0 -
You said the wrong things.0

As abgove .
You need to price up an alternative non VM supply .
Then say i am leaving as XXX is cheaper.
Phone line VM never was a phone line .
BT Open Reach as was are the old lines that where used as phone lines . Replaced by fibre to the local cabinet for many then the old copper wire to the home .
You pay line rental for this data line .0 -

Maybe I should have started the other way round. I thought I'd see what they would offer me first. After talking about it for a few minutes, I did say the offer wasn't good enough and I'd be better looking at other providers as they have new subscriber offers but I didn't mention which ones or prices.0

Update.
I tried phoning Virginmedia back. Every time I said I wanted to leave, they said they would put me through to retentions. After hanging on there each time for 20 minutes, I was cut off and had to try again. So I signed up for Talk Talk a couple of days ago.Today I got a call from Virgin offering me 20 mbps for £12 a month and a £40 credit with the option of upgrading to 50 mbps for £24 a month.0
