Insurance after buying car

If you were going to see a car quite a distance away whats the best way to sort out insurance so your insured for driving it away there and then?
If it was closer normally you could view then go away and sort insurance etc then go collect it the next day/few days later. But when it's a longer distance invoked I don't want to make 2 trips therefore if everything is fine with the car I'd want to just take it there and then. All seems fine from the info I have so pretty sure I'd be taking it but don't want to go and set up insurance for a year then get there and its massive different from the ad/info I have or the seller hasn't been honest.

Phone up your insurance company before you go and give them all the details including pickup date so they can tell you the cost and then just phone up to confirm on the day if you buy the car. They should be able to switch there and then, although you may not be able to tax it until the info is updated on MID. May ask the seller to hold off changing owner details online until you get home or you could be pulled up for no tax as that would be cancelled by updating ownership.0

Daily insurance is a thing, so you could take out a single day insurance and not risk much. Alternatively, some insurers will add an extra car to your policy for a day for a nominal fee and then you can swap it properly if the deal goes through.little_green wrote: »All seems fine from the info I have so pretty sure I'd be taking it but don't want to go and set up insurance for a year then get there and its massive different from the ad/info I have or the seller hasn't been honest.0 -

Why not?
They don't check the insurance status online.0 -
Yip I got 3 day policy once for £18.60. Fully comp so I could drive a relatives car whilst visiting. It was a 2.2 litre Land Rover and on checking I wasn’t insured to drive it anything else over 2.0 litre on my policy, so seemed a good reasonably cheap solution.0

1 day insurance to get you home and sort out an annual policy after it makes it back - as for VED, I would buy it online before you set off - that way you will have zero worries.
I wouldnt bother starting a new thread about the DVLA "scamming" motorists for "losing" a few days with of VED, depending on what day you buy the VED.0 -
When we went to look at/buy my youngest's first scooter, I took a laptop with me. Once we'd looked at it and sorted the price, I hooked up the lappy to my phone's wifi hotspot and did the tax & insurance there & then so he could ride t home
......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

that's insane. I was quoted just under £30 for 24hour insurance for a family member on a full uk licence, no claims or anything who has been driving 25+ years!!Yip I got 3 day policy once for £18.60. Normally 1 day cover is about £25-£30. You shouldn't really need to buy a 1 day cover if you have forward planned but could make it easier/quicker to get on your way home.0

Still a small price to pay compared to the punishment if caught. That was about 6 years ago so prices may well have gone up.0
