Windows on a 900mhz chip? hmm, slow! also, your 4gb ssd will be occupied fairly quickly by modern windows installs.0

I believe XP can be run on it..0

XP comes in different flavours.
A couple that might fit would be XP Embedded and Windows Mobile.
Asus may have done a deal with MS. MS are pretty aggressive ensuring that their s/w get onto things. Asusl builds a lot of computer stuff. XP can probably be tuned to run from flash memory.
(Aside: My last install of Ubuntu 7.10 on a PIII 850Mhz took ages and wasn't as problem free as 7.04. It runs quite slowly. I'll have a look for another variety and see if its quicker. So the viable opposition is going the same way as MS, bigger, slower, bloatier. I know Ubuntu is not the only fruit. But it is perhaps the most user accessible).0 -
I'd wait, a 10inch screen version is coming out soon, and from what i understand its no bigger than the current model.
That rumour has been quashed by Asus themselves. There are no plans for a 10" screen. eeeuser.com has the link.
Although the built in hard drive is only 4gb (solid state, no moving parts, hence fast boot up), the machine takes SD cards, including the new SDHC ones which go up to 32GB, so storage needn't be a problem. If you want more, you can take advantage of the 3 USB2.0 sockets and bung a mechanical hard drive on, although that defeats the object of portability somewhat.
Don't be put off by the Linux. It feels like and operates like windows xp - in fact that's unfair; its more user friendly than that.
(incidentally I'm typing this on the eee PC now!)0 -
These are being tested in schools with the possibility of all pupils getting one. XP can be installed and Asus now ship them with XP Home (not pro for some reason). Linux is fine and it comes with open office, games, media player, etc. It also has wireless and webcam. Battery life is more like 2 hours. There is also talk of interchangeable covers. The price will drop to about £180 once the supply meets demand. Expect bigger flash drive.0

I remember my Grandfather saying what a ridiculous waste of money it was that schoolchildren had pens and books. When he was at school they used a slate and chalk and it was perfectly good enough. :rolleyes:It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
