I want to pass on a series of items via the Freecycle network.
The questions is, how do I contact them? How do I join?

I have found the Swansea Freecycle page, but do not want or need another e-mail address (yahoo), which is the next link. Have I missed something?

Would some kind MSE-er please explain what to do!

I'm only on the Newport one... you have to join "Yahoo Groups" first, and as far as I can tell they force you to create a Yahoo email address. You don't have to do anything with it - I never have!

Then you find the link to your Freecycle group and there will be a button somewhere like "Request to Join this Group". That then pings off an email to the moderator who may ask you some questions before they authorise you (in my case it took about 3 weeks).

    Hope that helps!

  • i am part of cardiff freecycle and i know lots of member use their own usual email addresses
my aunty is also a freecycler and created a yahoo account just for freecyling, she said she only then used that email for either freecycle stuff or spam emails when she was unsure about any new website
    good luck to you

Hang on, Don't you have to recieve messages from the people that want your stuff through the yahoo mail system? Or atleast have your pop mail server set up to download your yahoo mails to your existing mail program?

I have to admit when I looked at freecycle, as a wanter & giver, I found it totally confusing. And the bit about having to be authorised by someone really peed me off, Who are they to think they have the "moderator rights" to the Cardiff area freecycle? I don't think I have been back since then, I don't know if I was allowed to join or not. - I don't use yahoo very much.

I think the idea is brilliant, but the user friendlyness of the whole system needs to be looked at.

I have gone a bit further into this and must admit I am confused - especially about having to 'apply' and be 'authorised'.
Does this mean I have to qualify? will my unwanted stuff be inspected?

All I wanted to do was pass on things I don't want - quickly and easily - to somebody who could use them. End of story. Bring back the Rag and Bone Man, at least you got a windmill!

I'll try to explain as simply as i can!

To join a freecycle network on yahoo groups you will need a Yahoo email address, which is simple and free to use. You will then join your group, you will need to be authorised, the moderators do authorise majority of people unless you are dodgy. (I think the aim here is to prevent people joining with 10 different ID's and take all the things to sell in Car Boots and Ebay, which is becoming more and more frequent)

As soon as you are approved you will be able to "Freecycle" your unwanted things put up a post for individual items as its easier. I feel its better to have a seperate email for freecycle as you do get a hell of alot of messages (these can be stopped but again another thing to worry about) I was getting about 150 emails a day from freecycle untill i changed my settings!

Any more Q's then fire away i will assist all i can x

    lol no

once you are a member then you can post offered items ( the advert is then checked before going live on the site)
  • i must admit..... i advertised i wanted a fridge and a freezer.... and i felt as though they gave tem to me to save them going to the tip.. which to be honest thats where they belonged....

my frodge freezer was on its last legs and could not afford to buy one.. so i asked for either a fridge... a freezer.. or a fridge freezer....

someone responded and said they had a fridge and a freezer..... great i thought ...so i took my frodge freezer to the tip.. and picked the items up... left the fridge and feezer to stand and plugged in a few hours later...... omg... about 20 mins later there was black smoke croming from the back of the fridge..... good job we didnt go out as it could have burned the house down......

there was a sider advertised a while back... so i repsonded..... and hubby went to pick it up the next day.. the thing was dead... been dead for a while......

so i dont really bother now with the freecycle as i honestly think a lot of the stuff is reaaly passed its use by....
