I did think of coffee, as part of a hamper idea, but the OH said that he's more than likely to have a pod machine; he's probably right, but there's always room for different coffee.

I think the hamper idea is lovely, and even if they use pods you can't beat fresh coffee.
  • Fad? Really?

That's odd because I've seen, heard about and done it all my life and I'm looking at 70!

Just because something has now become prevalent on social media doesn't mean it never even existed before the current era.

All those people who put a note in the loved one's obituary notice saying donations to so-and-so charity or good cause in lieu of flowers obviously don't realise they're victims of a current fad/fashion :D

Yes it is a current facebook fad if you did not know (now you do). I know of nobody who has ever asked or wanted money to be given to charity for their birthday and i'm in my mid 30s.

Obituary and Birthday are quite different too. Flowers are nice but a total waste of money. They are expensive and die after a few days, so I assume that Is why a Charity is then suggested.

Also when people die of a disease, there may well be a charity/hospice that helped them or you may want to donate to one doing research into the illness etc. So it obviously makes sense in that situation.

I'd stick with the bottle of wine or champagne idea and slip the USB stick with limited photos (you and your family, your mum when she was young and any of you together)into the bag. That's celebratory and a bit personal and IMO enough.

    P. S. I don't think the charity thing is that new. So many people don't want 'stuff' so it's a good option especially when people say 'no presents, just your presence'. Now that is naff!!
  • Cinema vouchers. Then he can have a lovely night out to see whatever he fancies.

I think the memory stick of photos is gorgeous & if you wanted to run up a basic family tree & add that in GEDCOM format, you could hand over a quick guide to the family over several generations.

I would think hard about the photo idea - if he was adopted out of the family, he may feel a little bitter about it - and photos of the rest of the family might only serve to alienate him further. Same with the "brother" idea - a tad cheesy.

I would go with one of the gift token ideas - a day's experience/cinema theatre ticket vouchers.

Do you make things ie crafty stuff? You could make him something with a note saying 'the rest of the family have had to suffer my hobby so your not going to escape'. You could bake him a cake if you don't do crafty things.

As you don't live locally to each other perhaps something from where you live - good artisan cheese/drink/local honey...
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,

Thank you for all your ideas; some really wonderful ones in there. I've decided to go with a small hamper and fill it with things such as cheese, coffee, artisan crisps and dark chocolate. I'm going to add other things in, such as local honey, a cinema card, a mug, one of the Ladybirds for Grown-Ups books and even a pair of socks with a note saying something along the lines of 'I believe these are traditional'. I do like the idea of a voucher for a track day experience, but I'll keep that one in reserve for another time.

My sister is going to do the fast car USB idea, but she's only using photos of the three of us and our families, with perhaps one or two of our birth mum. I know that I'm desperate for ever scrap of information about her, but it can be difficult to process and he may not feel the same, so we've agreed to play it down.

Thank you again. I really do appreciate your help.
