Proof of ownership/title

Original receipt, credit card/debit card payment or proof of a loan secured on the car if it was bought that way.
I can prove ownership of my current two cars because since getting into classics some time ago I got in the habit of keeping all the paperwork but for every single car before that I couldn't prove ownership if I had to because like most people I threw the receipt in the bin after a while. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. watching all these Police/baliff videos on Utube.
V5/registrations is not proof of ownership. Being on the insurance is also not. So what proves who IS the owner of the vehicle. Is it only the original receipt, or what...
No, not only the original receipt. Normally it would come down to the courts to decide.
A lot of things could be used - either on their own or together with other things - to prove ownership. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
As the saying goes, possession is 9/10ths of the law!0

A receipt doesn't prove anything other than you once owned a car. I could buy a car tomorrow (with receipt), sell it the day after (or any time later) and I've got a receipt for a car I don't own.0

Though of course the purchaser has a newer receipt which overrides yours in the court case...
I have the original receipt for my current car - it's in the folder with the warranty and the service receipts. On the bookshelf with the insurance documents, V5, MOT paperwork etc. I have always kept my car documentation. I thought most people would do this - so am I the oddball or is Tarambor?I need to think of something new here...0 -
According to: https://www.gov.uk/responsibilities-selling-vehicle there is no recommendation you write out a receipt when selling.
I'm currently trying to prove I don't own a vehicle! Apparently a signed and dated v5c with new keeper details is not enough proof.0 -

How do you prove a negative?
Surely the other party should be proving you DO own a vehicle?
Probably a chat for another thread though0 -

Same here. We keep files on our cars. Both files have V5, insurance and bill of sale documents. In addition we also keep copies of V5 and insurance docs in the cars (in case of an accident). I know some will disagree and say that a thief can use them but I prefer it.'Just because its on the internet don't believe it 100%'. Abraham Lincoln.

To who/why?
If its for a debt then even the self proclaimed "respectable" HCEOs on the sheriffs are coming have a habit of misrepresenting the situation. Such as when a debtor lives with the parents and they threaten to seize all of the parents belongings unless receipts are provided. They end up leaving with nothing - yet its never highlighted or explained. Its because they need to be reasonably certain the goods belong to the debtor.
I'm all for people paying their debts but sometimes the innocent 3rd party (parents, friend or whatever) ends up paying because of those threats. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
