Taxing a car without V5C as new owner?

I'm thinking of buying a car that is missing it's V5C. I can get a new V5C in my name using form V62, but according to the notes, I 'may' not be able to tax it until I receive the new V5C in my name.
Anyone know what they mean by 'may' such as the circumstances when you can and can't? Seems unusually vague.
I've got nowhere to store it off-road, so if I can't tax it then I won't be able to buy it.

Get the seller to obtain a replacement V5C before you buy it is one option.0

You can tax the car with the same V62, just do it at the post office.0

Do your research on the car before you go, fingers crossed you dont buy a wrong'un.
Apologies, Typo in my earlier post, what I read on the DVLA and Post office sites was that you could only tax with a V62 application if you were already the RK. If you are a new keeper the V5 or new keeper slip is required.0 -

I've read the notes on the V62 and it indicates that you can try to tax it at the same time, but that you 'may' not be able to until you receive the new V5C in your name. Seems a bit vague, so I may need to visit a post office and ask directly.

Having done a bit of Google research (so no guarantee) it may be that if the car is still registered to an individual you can't tax it without the V5 or new keeper slip however if it is shown in trade or the previous keeper had told DVLA they no longer have the vehicle you are OK.0
