Why is speeding socially acceptable?

...you're barking up entirely the wrong tree thinking speeding is the main cause.
I'm not sure why you are finding it so difficult to understand that that's not the point that is being made. The point is that an accident occurring at high speed is considerably more likely to lead to death and injury for anyone involved than an accident at a low speed. It's simple physics.0 -

Driving 1000 miles to Spain via France on toll roads and saw fewer accidents than on the 5 miles of dual carriageway i use daily every morning......and fewer police cars0

No !!!!!
Seriously?
Wow - who'd have thought it!
Now, whats the relevance? As has been said by Scrapit, whats your proposal? Ban motorways? Make people drive everywhere at 10MPH? Get people to walk in front of cars and wave flags?
As i said, its inappropriate speed thats the problem, not speed itself.
And, in fact, if you want to increase road safety, then pick your favourite from the list above to dwell on, because its certainly not speeding.0 -
I think, and strongly believe that those that drive religiously to the speed limit are more of a danger to society than those that speed.
Moderating your speed takes a certain level of concentration, which I would rather put toward looking 100m down the road, than say, looking at a speedo0 -
I could do 100MPH on an empty motorway at night and no lives would be wrecked, yet i am speeding.
Technically, you're correct. But if something were to go wrong, or a person were to run across the carriageway etc., you'd have less time to react and the resulting collision would be considerably more destructive.
In addition, there's the greatly increased noise for those that live and work nearby. And AGAIN that comes back to carelessness and inappropriate speed being the problem NOT the speed itself...
If all this is your argument for not having speed limits, I don't agree. To allow the general public to decide on a whim how fast they feel they can go would be incredibly careless.0 -
It always interested me that Holland was the only country I have been to where cars actually seem to respect that they have driven into an area where people live. They drive at 80MPH on the motorway but really seem to slow down when they enter town. We live in a beautiful area with a lovely duck pond. You can go and feed the ducks with your children and everything is peaceful. Suddenly you hear revving of an engine and a car flies past the houses at 50MPH. It's supposed to be 20MPH but without cameras or traffic calming nobody bothers. So people keep their children indoors all the time. It's like living in an area where people are randomly firing machine guns. Without the cars everything would be safe. I knew that cycling was actually promoted in Holland because people were fed up of cars killing the children. I just found an interesting website:

If you watch the film you can see some drivers behaving in a way that I would expect from a lot of inhabitants of this forum.0 -

It's possible to do both. I've managed it for 24 years without consequence.
Sticking to the speed limits does not remove the chances of having an accident - in fact, I'd be amazed if there's much evidence to say that speeding causes accidents.0
