Should I be suspicious of Halfords free MOT?

I used the free MOT.
Booked it in for a Saturday morning, dropped it off for 10am, went shopping and got back to the Autocentre.
The guy came through with the paperwork, it had one advisory and that was a tyre, so a consumable item.
All the staff I spoke to were very polite, was even offered a coffee while I was waiting for the paperwork.
So it was done on time, done professionally, they even put the drivers seat back to how it should be as the tester was about a foot taller than me!
I got the MOT after buying some camping gear which I needed last year. So 99% free for me, all it really cost was the extra fuel taking it there instead of the usual place.0 -

i used this in november, purchased £1 item on click and collect, received voucher 1 week later, booked mpot, day b4 mot checked all the basic item, eg light tyres etc. went there and stayed in reception (took some reading) was all done within an hour, passed with no advisories, best £1 i have spent.
very good service all round, though car only has 10k miles so i would expect it to pass0 -

Neither of those change the fact that to me, the user, it is free. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Another satisfied customer here. Booked the free MOT last week, turned up today and waited while they conducted the test and had a free coffee. Car passed with advises on brake pipes (I've already bought the parts for doing these), play in track rod end and lack of reserve travel on handbrake.
No upselling at all, very professional service as usual.0 -
It shouldn’t be Halfords’ spin on an MOT. An MOT is supposed to be the same anywhere. There are mitigating and human factors which may affect conducting a test, but I don’t think Halfords will want to fall foul on malpractice by failing vehicles that should’ve passed otherwise DVSA would have a field day. If one branch has an issue, the whole Halfords circuit (Authorised Examiner) can be affected so they should be careful, not foolish.
If they want to give an MOT away for 50p then fine. Perhaps by their logic if they can get more vehicles in for test, then perhaps they’ll more likely have failures and then produce more work and perhaps even keep some customers?
Over a third of MOT’s are failures every month so being 1 in 3 vehicles fail, they could fancy their chances on getting more repair (money making) work.0
