Should I be suspicious of Halfords free MOT?
Has anyone else used the free Halfords MOT deal? I think the deal was you had to buy something from their stores (I purchased a 50p sponge) and you could then book a free MOT.
They failed my car on one thing....the headlight height adjuster wasn't working, they said it wasn't the fuse and the headlight would need replacing for £250!
They also said that the bracket holding the headlight was broken...see attached pic....I'm not sure it this was like this before, I don't think it was, I'm sure they didn't do it...
I did the MOT a few weeks before it expires in case anything cropped up, I'm going to try and do it myself, but just interested in anyone elses experience with their MOTs and whether this failure comes up a lot
Thanks

nothing in life is free , a 50p sponge would not even cover the cost of the MOT from vosa (or whatever its called now)
the MOT HAS to generate them money , not be a lost leader0 -
If it's free, you are the product.0

I would just pay the £45 for the MOT at a normal testing station - its obvious they are trying to stitch you up.0

Loads of reputable garages discount the MOT, recommendations from satisfied customers are better than marketing campaigns.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0 -
I've had MOTs and services from Halfords Auto Centres before. They always seemed pretty honest & reasonable.
That was when I paid £40 though, I don't have any experience using the "free" MOT service."The problem with quotes you read on the internet, is that most of them are made up." - Winston Churchill0 -
It will cost £800. Every time you walk into Halfrauds they want £800.0

Every time !
The phase " Theres no such thing as a free lunch" has been around for ever - but mainly because its true0 -
OP, it has been virtually free for you - minus the 50p. You now know what the car would fail an MOT on, take it to a decent garage or DIY the repair, pay for another test and it passes. Only downside with the free MOT is if your car fails on a major and you can't drive it away.0

Rubbish. Some things are even better than free, for example my cash back credit card I use. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
