Pay at Pump / Santander

Just been to Tesco to fill up with fuel and my card didn't work, twice, in the pay at pump machine. So paid in kiosk, and used the same card which worked fine. Was a Santander debit card on my Select account with plenty of available funds. Same card I have used for the last year in the same machines.

Mentioned the machine not working in the kiosk, and was told that it was becoming very common, "some banks don't like dealing with the paperwork".

Anyone heard of this or aware of it being a bank policy?

You can only use pay at the pump if you're debit card is offline and not online. You can check if you're card is either on santanders online banking.

    Paperwork? what paperwork?

I haven't had the issue you mention - I always pay with TescoPay+, linked to Santa debit card, so have to go into the kiosk anyway to pay. It's always working fine.

If I were you, I'd ring the Select line and ask them for an explanation and to tell them they cost you time because you have to go into the kiosk ;)

You go to Account Services on the Santander online banking, Then look for use card abroad and it will show you the cards you have. Mine shows "DEBIT MFC ONLINE" If you have a card that says Offline then you can use it on such places like pay at pumps.

I'm not sure how one would qualify for an offline, I guess maybe when you open the account they do a credit search and base the decision to what card you get wit them, Even though you can still have account. But am not sure the bank will tell you how to qualify.

Oh wow, that's an obvious place to look for (not, lol)! But thanks for pointing me at that, I had never looked at this before, or known that this was there.

Mine says "DEBIT MFC" and "GOLD DEBIT MFC", which is pretty much meaningless mumbo jumbo to me. No mention of 'online' or 'offline', although I happen to know that all my Santa debit cards do work offline.

I dont doubt you for one minute, she was the most unhelpful CSA I think I have spoken to. She questioned why I didn't have my card on me (only received it Saturday), when I explained I do not have access to online banking yet so cant access my money, she bluntly told me there are cash machines and would I like a list of nearby ATM's. :rotfl:

I mentioned Pay@Pump she said all card work at them, I said ok what about where there isn't an active connection to authorise the amount, such as a plane 10,000 feet in the air, she said they can be used there and everywhere.

This is a year old but might be of interest. It is for basic accounts but shows that Santander has (had?) the facility:

    Santander
Blocked? Yes – at ALL pumps, including updated ones

So I got some paperwork today, it states my card is MFC ONLINE YOUTH

No idea what the youth is as I’m certainly not a youth

Edit: just called said that card was ordered in error and sent me a new full debit card
