Beetroot in modules

This year I'm going to try growing beetroot that I first sow in modules

Normally, in the past I've sown directly where they are to grow, with mixed successes over the decades

But never too old to learn and thinking I'd try the sow in modules & transplant

Anyone here done this?
I know I can buy growing already in modules but see no reason not to sow my own as beetroot are one of the easier crops IMO

If no one on here has done it, then I'll let you know how I get on

  • With my varied success over the years sowing outdoors with minimal protection, I guess with modules you might at least be guaranteed nice leaves for salads. Which reminds me - I should be clearing my beetroot bed today, we had a couple of nice ones for xmas, but now the bed is mainly bittercress, with maybe something red hiding in there...

As a benchmark, for me 'nice' beetroot is anything bigger than a ping pong ball

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?
  • Yep we sow beetroot in packs and transplant in April works well
  • Just cleared that bed, found three beetroot - just useable. If they were radishes I would have been proud...

I used to get on well sowing parsnips in toilet roll tubes, so I'd think beetroot would work fine in modules.

Update, taken the plunge & sowed 4 modules, 3 seeds per module and depending how that goes I'll sow more later on

We've sown in modules to get them off to an early start - and put several seeds in each module - three or four.

If you don't thin them out to one per module and plant out with room round each module, you end up with clusters of beets rather than the traditional row.

We've done onions in the same way.

Update, my modules beets have now germinated, I used Solist variety that I had to hand so thinning not required as it happens

We had the last of the carrots for tea today - we would have had the beetroot but two were unusable and the third turned out to be a radish after all - but somewhat woody, being something like a year old - a nice bit of treen as they say on Antiques Roadtrip...

I am growing beetroot in modules in little clumps after seeing a Charles Dowding video. Being a newbie with a brand new plot it will help me know what is a weed and what I have planted. Otherwise I might end up spending time nurturing lots of weeds!!

I end up doing that anyway, I have various types of bittercress growing - which are edible - to check, rub them and you should get a strong cressy aroma
