Are you attempting to use your VCR immediately after turning on your TV? We have found that the back light for our TV blocks some IR signals immediately after switching on, the problem then fades as the TV warms up. We had the same with a really bright light bulb in our lounge!

Have you tried replacing the batteries?

Or opening the battery cover and "spinning" the batteries on the contacts? (This can help remove oxide on the terminals to improve battery contact).

Try the ‘Peter Kay method’....take the batteries out and rub ‘em,...works every time! :money:

I programmed a universal remote for the VCR and have the same problem. It only works up close initially but works further away after a few miniutes. So the problem is with the VCR, not the remote?
Aged electronics can often suffer ‘cold start’ problems i.e. a bit dodgy until it warms up,...then it starts to function normally. Conversely, electronics can suffer intermittent ‘heat’ problems once the circuitry gets up to its normal operating temperature.

Temperature related faults can be notoriously difficult to diagnose/rectify and are often a pre-cursor to a more serious problem some way down the line.

Now you know that the problem lies within the VCR you may?? be able to get it fixed locally at an independent repair shop;...or you could just put up with the problem until the VCR finally expires and ascends into ‘Silicon Heaven’.:(

I euthanized my VCR some years ago;... but not before I’d copied all my treasured video tapes (via my laptop) to DVD’s.:)
