Wonky Remote Control

My remote control turns on the VCR but the play button doesn't work unless I walk right up to the VCR. After using the remote for a few minutes the range expands and I can use the remote across the room. How can I get the remote to work from across the room without this "warm up" period?

Have you tried replacing the batteries?0

Or opening the battery cover and "spinning" the batteries on the contacts? (This can help remove oxide on the terminals to improve battery contact).0

I've brought several remotes back to life by splitting then apart (use a spudger or old credit card) and clean up the rubber buttons and the pcb. I use meths to slightly dampen a microfibre cloth, but I'm sure there are better liquids.0

Agree with the above, take the case apart, spray some contact cleaner (or WD40) onto a clean cloth, and give the contacts on the circuit board a wipe over.0

All of the above, plus investigate whether the IR receiver has come loose inside the VCR. Sometimes these are loosely attached and can become tilted or partially obscured resulting in poor performance (though this wouldn't explain the "warming up" phenomenon).
If all else fails, there are universal replacement remotes readily available.0 -

Use the opportunity to upgrade to a DVD player0

all the above will work, and I have also split a remote apart to clean the pads and copper contact pads use any spirit you can lay your hand on even gin or vodka will work, never used WD 40 though but give it a go."Imagination is more Important than knowledge"0

I programmed a universal remote for the VCR and have the same problem. It only works up close initially but works further away after a few miniutes. So the problem is with the VCR, not the remote?0
