I have the same experience today.
The soft search said it was very likely for them to offer me a Nationwide Member Credit Card, and then I clicked to continued, then I was offered £1500@24.9%APR, then I was able to keyin my desired credit limit,I keyed in £800 and at the end of the final hard search, Step 4 of 5
“We have approved your application, just a few steps to go”
Congratulations,XXXX! You have been approved of a Nationwide Member Credit Card with a credit limit of £800@a 24.9% APR.
This was what I got.
Please kindly advise, have I truly been approved for this card?

If it's any concelation, Nationwide gave me a 2.5k limit, and my credit history isn't the best. I've banked with them for ages though!

Sounds like it - I was given an accept soft search then declined at hard search. From what I've managed to get out of their complaints team, it was a bug and I never should have got the initial accept. My step 5 was something along the lines of "we'll be in touch in 5 days" which is when I know something was wrong. It would've been a miracle if they had actually accepted me, but was worth a shot!
From what you've got, fairly confident you've been approved just with a low limit.
Even working in lending, I do share other people's comments regarding soft searches. They seem like absolute rubbish as far as I'm concerned. E.g. Barclaycard have given me 90% chance for the last 3 years, but they've openly told me I've got 0% chance until my adverse drops off my file (fair enough, completely understandable). They won't answer my question as to why the soft search is saying highly likely though!
As far as I'm aware, at soft search a company can see everything (certainly they can for mortgage soft searches, so I'm unsure why it would be any different for credit cards etc). So if they can see everything, what's changed between soft and hard search!? Certain checks might not be carried out at soft search stage (e.g. ID/Fraud), but is that a legitimate reason for going from £1500 to £800? If someone fails the ID/Fraud check, I'd expect a proof of ID request rather than a reduced limit.
I really think it's about time the FCA clamped down on places abusing the soft search (primarily credit card issuers IMO).0 -
