new brake pads & discs cost

Not even kwikfit would change one side at a time.
You either do you the front pair or the rear pair.
If you are talking dealer prices then probably £200-£250 per axle.
A local garage using aftermarket parts could charge maybe as low as £125 per axle.
So returning to your original post £400 would have been a reasonable price for discs and pads all round ( front and rear axles on your average bog standard car.) .
It also makes a big difference if you choose OEM parts or aftermarket.0 -

BMW Z3 the OEM rear shock absorbers were supplied by Sachs and are sold by Sachs as Super Touring. Price from BMW £92 each when sold under the BMW part number. Price purchased from ECP under the Sachs part number £96 for the pair. In fact when I opened the Sachs packaging the shock absorbers still had both the Sachs and BMW part numbers on them.0 -
If you know the make/ model of the car, then ring around a few garages for quotes, for either discs and pads or just brake pads...0

Why do people think forums are the place for answers rather than car part suppliers or garages ?Mortgage free

We have a 3.0 Audi A4 and paid I think £315 for front and rear pads and discs supplied and fitted a couple of years ago locally, using Brembo discs and pads (a good make of brake parts).
If you're buying them yourself and getting someone to fit, I often use ECP (EuroCarParts) as you can put the items in the basket, leave it a few days and return and quite often you've got a hefty discount code to 'encourage' you to finish the transaction0 -
There's always a decent discount code visible on the ECP website and if you leave the items in the basket a few days the code they then offer you is always less than the original discount.
Although by the time they offer you a discount to return and buy the original code is sometimes not available anymore and has been replaced by another offer.
Codes vary wildly between 25-50% but prices are varying on the website as well so one days 25% off can often result in a slightly lower overall price than another days 50% off.
I once needed a rear caliper and their website showed £185 with £20 refunded on return of old part. With the code showing on the website that day the price was reduced to around £100 , , ,however I asked at work and as they had an account with ECP they were able to get the part for £62 with £20 refunded on return of the old part so net price of £42.
I regularly use ECP but you have to keep a close eye on their prices from day to day.0 -

I find that very hard to believe,it could be potentially very dangerous.0 -
Are you sure it wasn't wheel hub and bearing ?0
