High energy usage

Hello,
Currently live in a house with my mum, brother, and sister. As well as this, we have two foreign students that live with us. Whilst I expect our usage is higher then the average, the figure's still seem a bit too much. Can other's let me know if these look normal and what I can do to find out what is causing the high usage rates (mainly electricity)
- Electricity: 9,350 kWh
- Day: 7,125 kWh and Night: 2,250 --> This is on a deemed economy 7 tariff
- Gas: 21,822 kWh --> Pretty happy with the gas figure. Mainly the electricity that I am worried about.
Thanks in advance.

I doubt they have night storage heaters as they have gas too so would be mad to use electricity for heating.

They need to check that the lodgers aren’t keeping their rooms extra toasty with electric heaters.

Ofgem Typical Domestic Consumption Values define 'High' level as 17000kWh for gas and 4600 kWh for electricity so the values you give exceed these.

Have you got these figures from your own (preferably monthly) meter readings? If not then start taking your own readings, with a few weekly readings initially.

Look at anything that uses electricity for heating or to make hot water. Immersion heaters, electric showers, tumble dryers and all electric heaters. Do they need to be on? Can they be used less? What is using the electricity at night?

You use the term "deemed tariff". If this is the standard variable tariff then you should also be looking at selecting a tariff which reduces your costs.
  • Yes, this is annual consumption for the year (based on estimates)

    So at best a guess.

What do the meters tell you and why are you on the expensive deemed tariff and why are you on E7 ?

Do not use estimates - find two bills about 12 months apart where the readings are ACTUAL

Double check the gas meter - is it metric, does the bill say m3 or ft3
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • - ft3 for tumble dryer.
  • I'm trying to get my mum to sit down with me and switch energy companies today. We are going to switch to bulb (this will help cut our costs by £1000). I still aim trying to solve the problem behind the high electricity usage. There may be a problem between night and day figures on the meter reading, and this is something I am in contact with EDF (electricity) about. I know we had a meter back in 2012 for our electricity which was broken and giving us wrong figures. I'd be surprised if the current meter had the same problem as the last...

I don't know why my family are on this tariff. I'm trying to sort all this and find out the answers to these questions myselg.

Yeah we use gas for heating and the cooker. We have had problems with our lodgers in the past in regards to using too much electricity, but we keep on top of this now.
