boiler ripoff?

Got an older boiler (over 12 years) that has been regularly serviced each year with a plan from a company, which also covered breakdown and heating. Last boiler service they did was June. We have a number of years documents to prove the regular service.
This plan got too expensive so we shopped around and found a new company with a very similar offer. As part of the new plan they needed to service the boiler. The engineer has just been out and said that the boiler looks like it's never been serviced, it's a terrible mess and will cost a lot to put it right.
So either the first company has done a very bad job or the second company is lying to us! I haven't said the names of the companies (am I allowed to on this forum?). My question is what do I do next? I feel that we are going to get no joy from either company, as they will each blame the other. Meanwhile we are going to get taken for a ride.
Who do we trust? Who do we complain to?
apologies if this is the wrong area to post.

Welcome to the forum.
Yes please name the companies.
Obviously we cannot tell how well the first company carried out servicing. However I have doubts about any company stating lack of servicing costing a lot to put right.
As your first company covered breakdowns, they would be stupid to neglect any servicing that would entail expensive repairs.
I would get the second company to put their observations in writing and give an estimate of costs involved.
You can find the servicing schedule for your boiler on-line. For most boilers the main task is to clean burner and the rest is just checks.0 -
