NHS interview, will they honour holiday?

I have an interview for an NHS job on April 3rd. I have not qualified yet from university and so would not be able to start until I have handed in my final pieces of work which is the last week of June. They are aware of this when I asked before applying, however I would like a bit of a break before going straight into full time work after working hard finishing the degree. I am worried this will go against me in getting the job as they did say they need someone to start as soon as possible but that it was still worth me applying as other applicants will likely have to wait for their notice period plus DBS and references etc. So my question is whether they are likely to wait until mid July for me to start? And that’s IF I get the job, which I really do want.

A few days, sure. a few weeks, no.

    It's grown up time now.

Thank you for your helpful response, I am 31 years of age with a family. I think I have grown up enough to know that a break from stress is a sensible thing to do.

Ok, well what do you think is fair and how much are you asking for??

I'm wondering what the average time frame is from interview to start date. Some say 2 months some say 3 months. I was planning a holiday when I finish for 2 weeks. It's not booked yet but I just don't know whether they have to honour holiday or whether it will g against me
  • Theyve already said they need someone ASAP, but would wait until you are finished if necessary. That was nice of them.

Now you are saying you want them to wait for you to finish PLUS another 2 weeks for you to have some RnR. There are probably people working in an understaffed place right now, and they need someone ASAP, yet you are potentially asking for an extra 2 weeks.

Youve already told them youre available from the end of June. messing them about now won't look good. they do not need to 'honour' holiday unless specifically agreed in the offer, an offer you havent got yet

    Fantastic.

I'm 33 with a family. Not sure how that's relevant?

As I said a few days off, more than reasonable. But two weeks is taking the mick, when they've already agreed to wait 2 -3 months

It was "It's grown up time now" comment, wasn't really needed. 3 months would be fine from the date of interview in April. I guess what i'm trying to figure out is whether they have to go on points or the person who can start the soonest.

They don't have to go with anything. Points only make up one aspect of the interview.

Typically we'd expect someone to start with-in 30 days (in my NHS dept)

We could extend that for the right person. BUT if we've extended already to accommodate a qualification; asking again may be taking the mick slightly.

The excuse of relaxing due to stress only goes so far. The NHS isn't a cakewalk. It's stressful. So if you need two weeks off before you've even started; my concern would be how long you'd last

Have you actually signed a contract of employment with them yet ?.
If you have then you *could* ask for the holiday time.
if you havent and you ask you *may* find the job offer withdrawn.

I am fully aware the NHS isn't a cakewalk. I never said I 'NEED' 2 weeks off, i would like to take my family on holiday, I don't think that is a concern as to how long I would last. Anyway thanks for your response. Take care
