Kitchen renovation help

Options
Hi all, I need to renovate my kitchen and I'm looking for some advice.

A kitchen supplier has come up with a design but I'm hoping for some comments. Eg is it normal to have the width of the wall and base units non symmetrical like that to make best use of the space?

Here's the plan:

The door on the left is an external door that is inward opening and the other two doors are internal ones that open outwards. 1 is the oven and hob, 4 is the dishwasher and 8 is an under counter fridge.

This is it 3D (ignore the colours):

Solar install June 2022, Bath
4.8 kW array, Growatt SPH5000 inverter, 1x Seplos Mason 280L V3 battery 15.2 kWh.
SSW roof. ~22° pitch, BISF house. 12 x 400W Hyundai panels

Your design may be restricted by the width of the built in units which makes it impossible for everything to be symmetrical. If it was me I would check that the regulations allow you to have a hob next to a wall without without a gap, Where will the pan handles go as they cant go to the side on the left?
If you are not happy why not try you own design? Look at the web site for https://www.diy-kitchens.com who make units in a multiple of widths and filler posts/panels. You can also save 36mm on the door side as you will not need end of run panels. Their units come colour matched to the doors.

Thanks for your reply. The cooker is already in that position and looks as though it has been since the house was built 70 years ago as that's where the gas supply and high amp electricity radial are. You're right it's not ideal but it does work and seems better than any alternative. Diy-kitchens are actually where I was thinking of buying from and used their online design tool.

What I was thinking for example is if you have a 600mm wide integrated under counter fridge next to a 400mm base unit, would you use a 600mm and 400mm wall unit above to keep it lined up vertically? Or would you put a 1000mm double wall unit above so you had two 500mm wall unit doors next to each other?

  • I’m not an expert by any means, but it only seems to be 1 unit that doesn’t line up and it is beside a window, so it’s maybe done intentionally to allow light into the whole room.

I now know what you mean about symmetrical. If it was me for your kitchen I would match base and wall widths. On Diy-Kitchen prices a 400mm and 600mm wall unit would cost about £15 more than having a single 1000mm one.
My kitchen from DIY-Kitchen is now nearly 10 years old and as good as new although I do have solid wood doors. The units arrive assembled for easy fitting and their pelmets, cornices, plinths, extra shelves and matching blank panels were very good value for money.

Is that 3 doors into the kitchen? If you could lose one of them it would free up space to put an oven and hob centre of one of the walls.

Either the back or the one opposite the window.

Yes, three doors makes it a bit awkward, but I don't think the advantages of removing one would outweigh messing up the flow of the house. Obviously the back door can't go as it leads into a store/utility room and the back garden. Another goes to the dining room and the third into the hall. Neighbours have blocked the one up opposite the window, but it means when you come through the front door you are faced with a dead end hallway that looks really odd to me, and to get to the kitchen you have to go through the living room and dining room.

I don't think it's wrong but it would annoy me every time I looked at it.

There is only one place in our kitchen (5 sets of top and bottom units) where the top and bottoms don't exactly line up, and that's above the washing machine. Even that is made to kind of line up by using a slim pull out thing next to the washing machine, so it's just the split that isn't the same on the bottom.

We have a similar layout to yours on our sink wall, with the window in the middle. On one side, the top units come right up to the window frame. It's not enclosed on the other side so there's plenty of light. I'd do as cranford suggested, as long as it will fit next to the window.

Your kitchen is quite small, and I think the designer has done a good job in giving you the maximum possible cupboard space. I don't think you or anyone will notice that the cupboard isn't aligned with the units underneath it. It is offset for a purpose.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

My kitchen is almost the same size - 2.4m x 3.4m. Did away with the wall units and have 5 drawline cupboards, one oven housing, an integrated fridge, and a 900mm pan drawer unit. Without the wall cupboards, the space looks a lot bigger than it used to and is so much brighter.

One comment I would make about your design - You really don't an oven or dishwasher next to a door, especially if it opens inwards. If nothing else, it prevents the door being opened fully. Throw in a couple of small children, and it is an accident waiting to happen.

If that's the best that can be done, I'd be gutted.

Please post the floorplan up. There has to be something that can improve it, but looking at the house as a whole is important.
